I pick this up a while back just because I thought it was very unusual. I have seen trench art but none like this. The glass over the man's photo is not glued but is under the crimped edge. What period is it from, Indian wars, WWI, Spanish American? Have you ever seen one like it? He is supposed to have been a Texas Ranger but no provenance so it does not count. Thanks ahead of time. I don't see a dimple in the primer. Is it unfired?

Cool, can ya tell how the glass was crimped in, wonder how ya make a picture that small. Interesting thanks for sharing.

Pitchy the glass is just under the square rim of the brass. Whomever made it knew what they were doing, probably a jeweler. It, more than likely, has a great story behind it that we will never know or it is a form of trench art that a soldier sent back to his girlfriend to wear around her neck. Being that the male is not in uniform I'm thinking the latter is not the case.
Pretty darn cool, will have to try and make one, that case is what they called a ballon head case isn`t it.
I don`t have one like that but i do have a old case that has that lettering on it.
No gotta figure out how to shrink a picture down that small.

Pitchy, when this was made photos were much smaller and he may have been cut out of a group shot. Now days you can make any photo smaller with the software like Adobe photoshop Elements 4.0 and a printer. I just don't understand how they got the glass in so well without cracking it?
What I do know is that the headstamp was no longer used after 1930.With the rebated rim it is somewhere around the turn of the century. I have some of those exact cases and they look very early to me, possibly 1890's-1905

Not to butt in on your thread but here`s a start of making one.
I wonder if they took a piece of broken glass and sat and filed it until it fit, i`m going to find out.

Well as I was getting ready for work this morning I remembered a necklace My wife had with a broken clasp so I figured this would be a good excuse to stop and see the jeweler. I pulled up this thread on my phone so he could see it. He said a piece of glass like that would most likely have come from someone who made eyeglasses. He says that's who he calls on to have add sizes watch crystals made today.
I hope that helps someone.

I was thinking that same thing, in fact if the eyeglass used could magnify the picture also.
