As the proud owner of a new to me 1894C I would like to hear your on game experiences and what you use on deer sized game. Tell me about cast and jacketed loads. This rifle came with a Williams foolproof sight with target knobs. I already have a Williams 5-D that I intend to use. If anyone has intrest in the Foolproof let me know.
Thanks, Goat

This is for a Rossi, but the Rossi and Marlins are not far apart in what they like to eat. The load data works for any .357 Mag rifle.

I have two favorites but I'm using the more unusual for the moment. those are either 15 gr of L'ilGun under the Remington 180 gr. SJHP (intended for the .357 Maximum in a pistol i.e. the same velocities as from a .357 Mag in a rifle) OR 18 gr. of L'ilGun under the Hornady 158 gr. XTP-FP ( the XTP-HP is not intended for these velocities where the bullet starts at 2000 fps).
Tim Sundles of Buffalo Bore says good things about the Speer Gold Dot bullets which might be a suitable sub for the XTP-FP.

At 1350 fps MV from a 4" S&W 19 the 158 grain Speer Gold Dot did not over-expand at 7 yds in 6 one gallon jugs of water contained in two cardboard boxes. That leads me to think it would hold up well at rifle muzzle velocity downrange.Hobie wrote:

That round is the Georgia Arms Deer Stopper. They have since lowered the load to 1250 fps, the old load was advertized at 1400fps.
