leverguns and sub-flooring

Post by Grizz »

I guess there's lots of things that come to mind...

Image

This is what I mocked up last October. It was twisted, warped, dirty, and out-of-square. No, I'm not talking about the politicians this time.

Image

Testing for length. Yup, it holds three at a time.

Image

Ah, a butt divider. A support and half the required panels trial fit. More head scratching to follow.

Image

Let's see, what's going to secure the rifles on that block?

Image

Ok, that works. Get to work and rasp out the other saddles.

Image

Here are all the parts. I had to do this because I learn with my hands, and it was easier to hack up the wood than to try drawing it out ahead of time. Now I have scale drawings too.

Image

Will the pretty Browning be sawn in half? (screams)

Image

Not in this movie! This is rated safe for children. You can see the felt that protects the furniture, and the holes for threading tie-downs. Those allow the box to rest on end and prevent the guns from falling out. I plan to fit another block to the lid that has heavy rubber for a secure travel hold down.

Image

The box has its own lifting gear. Slings for handling as well as for protecting the deck finish. Hasps for padlocks. Don't know why these should be needed. The box is comfortable to sit on, and I can probably drive one wheel up on it for impromptu oil changes.

This will do for the time being. More developments are on the way, but it could be a long time 'til I get them done. Lots of ammo and other tools fit inside.

Next time I will get some nice wood and book match the grain all the way around. And do a decent finish job.

Regards,

Grizz

That's Phil Bolger's Nymph design scaled up to 10 feet, lofted with metric measurements for an experiment, and welded from some left-over aluminum I had after another project..,

Looks great Grizz, will you be mounting any handles on it, top of the lid or one at each end?
I would love a case like that to travel with to the range or hunting.

That's not a stupid question. It's for packing some guns around with me when I'm traveling or going shooting. It holds 3 long guns and a bunch of short ones, and lots of ammo. It's a lot easier to pack than 3 guncases and 3 pistol cases and the ammo for them. It's supposed to not look like something that has guns in it. It fits right in behind the rear seats in my van. Or fits inside my shipping crates if I'm barging stuff somewhere. Or fits in the truck bed and looks like it belongs there. Or fits in a boat to keep stuff containerized.

Thanks for the interest guys. It's a test piece to learn how to do it. Those hemp 'gaskets' are the handles. It's too long for me to carry comfortably if the handles are on the end, the way they would be on a sea trunk.

Nice work.

I thought you might be making a "Gun Box" to hide under your "sub-floor" just in case the Govt. tries to make Americans register their guns.
Nice work! :) Sort of a hidden compartment in your home....I have a friend who has a hidden compartment behind a rock wall. He pushes a hidden button and has access to his weapons. Nobody would know it was there.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I need to do stuff with my hands to keep my brain functioning. There's enough info in the pics for someone to get their own toolbox started. It's fun to figure it out as you go. It's amazing the variations you can imagine AFTER the glue sets up, and there are a lot easier ways to enclose the space.

Keeping my eyes open for the right material. Next one will be out of solid wood. Maybe oak or walnut, or a combination.

Thanks for looking and for the responses. It's sitting around with some hardware cargo waiting for the next outing.

Nice work! And yes subfloors, ceilings, walls, 55 gal. drums out back, trucks, a stuffed anaconda, all potential hidey holes for our "tools".

You did a great job with the box.

I worked building furniture for a few years, now it is a hobby.

I have been teaching my 9 year-old daughter, she is taking to it quick.

We have been working on plans for a box for a couple of revolvers and their tools and ammo.

Thanks for sharing the pics.
