Yard sale find in 44/40 [a coupla years ago]

Post by hfcable »

my son wants me to post more pictures of things that i have gathered over the years and i will do so, though my photo skills need lots of work compared to most of you guys.
i literally found this at a yard sale at the home of a K-mart supervisor, no less. Nice fellow, sold me a 3 screw 357 ruger in excellent condition for 247.00 and sold me this [price was $1100.00, had to go get the cash, and you betcha i got back there fast !!]

which is a very nice condition [ the wood has been revarnished in the past, but not sanded] Whitney-Kennedy 1873 rifle in 44/40;
has most of its original bluing though faded a bit, and the bore is a perfect mirror like the day it left the factory;

the wood is obviously a factory upgrade/special order [definitely original] but the gun is otherwise standard, including the funky neat serpentine lever.
it feeds and operates perfectly, though groups will probably be improved by a softer lead bullet and black powder, which i will try this summer.

it was only 3 years ago, and he had some other good stuff too, like a 3 digit serial number marlin 1881 in 45/70; no finish remaining but metal and wood were very nice otherwise, bore was very good.....the price $750.00 !!
i already had a very nice one with very pretty wood or would have bought that one too.

Alaska is a bit of a haul to drive up to for yard/garage sales, but if the deals are this good... :wink:

Meant to ask: anybody loaded for or shot a whitney-kennedy?
my results were 'okay' using cowboy action loads, but suspect i need to slug the bore or go to soft lead and black powder for best results.....anybody else done this?
