OT living by the signs
It's getting time to start planing a garden again and I was wondering how many folks out there do things by the signs? My mom always plants by the signs and she buds a lot of trees which have to be done when the signs are in the right place as well. Do y'all cut yer animals by the signs and such? anybody do anything else that I'm not aware of?
I'm trying to learn more about this as well.
thanks,

Rusty,
I come from a family line that firmly believes in planting and cutting by the signs. Since I just retired, I will be planting my first garden in over thirty years. I plan to try to stay close to the recommended dates. A lot of the old Florida Crakers also used grape vines as an indicator as to when to plant. They would not plant until the vines started to bud. That does not necessarily coincide with the signs, but it is suposed to indicate that there will be no more killing frosts.
I have built a lot of fences over the years and have observed what I have been told by the old timers is sign related. Try this - Go outside and dig a hole today and put all of the dirt in a bucket as you take it out. Then put the dirt back in the hole. Do this on the same day of the week for four weeks straight. Sometimes the dirt will fill the hole back up just right, sometimes there will not be enough dirt and sometimes too much. You can also dig the hole today and wait a week to put it back in and see different results. I think some (maybe a lot) of the difference is due to moisture content depending on how long the dirt is out of the hole, but it sure is interesting.

Bruce,
Are you in Fla?
A lot of stuff here we can plant almost all year long. I just get a tremendous urge to plant a garden this time of year. the hardest time is in the dead of summer when the night time temps are still in the mid 70's
I've said that about digging a hole as you state here before myself.
There are a lot of other things as well.

Yeah, I garden by the signs, the signs at the garden center! Seriously, I've got the blackest thumb in my family. I do what they tell me to do when they tell me to do it and I wear insulating gloves. In school where the kids grow a bean, mine rotted in the cup. That was at age 7 and it never got any better.
Sincerely,

Grandpa always followed the Old Farmers Almanac to the letter regardless of what it looked like outside and always had a wonderful garden full of food.

Try to plant by the signs.
Here in North GA, the oldtimers warn never to plant before Good Friday....well, a couple of years ago the weather was just so warm and I had some free time so I planted during the week before Good Friday.
My plants had just started out of the ground when we had a late frost...
Anyone whose plants had not cleared the soil (i.e. those planting after GF) did not lose their gardens.
Also cut timber by the signs.

Rusty, I just retired back to my home town area - Lafayette County in north Florida. Our weather up here is about what you would expect from Georgia. We will probably have a frost for the next two or three days and it does freeze here often in the first part of March. I have potatoes, onions and collards planted right now, but the other stuff will have to wait a few weeks.
Duff, I been around, just don't post often. BTW, I told you and some others I would let you know about the hunt clubs around here. There will be some openings this coming year in the club I am in and probably a few of the others. The only problem is the total lack of public camp grounds and only one small motel. Prices run around $900-1,000 per year. Let me know if anyone has an interest.

OT living by the signs
I have a black thumb, can't grow anything.
I try to live by the signs, ie, I pray every day,
ask for answers, look for signs.
Still have to learn the patience part (learning
this lesson for all my life), pulled my hair out
(what's left of it) last week trying to decide
which used car to buy. Didn't have to go thru
all that, ended up with the first car I looked
at at $500 below first asking price.
Sometimes the signs are hard to come by.
I used to be more in touch with nature,
and I want to remedy that part of my life
as well.

Bruce,
I know where you're talking about. I run up 19 to go to our store in Tallahassee. I love that part of the state. If I was going to retire that's the area I'd pick too. I have a cousin that lives north of Perry in Capps. He's retired now from St. Joe but runs a little saw mill to keep himself busy.
I had to get two different Almanacs to get one with the planting dates spelled out. " The Old Farmer's Almanac" gives the signs for the days but it doesn't tell what to do on those days. Being ignorant as I am I had to go get a "Harris' Farmer's Almanac" to have it spelled out for me.
My mom sent me the front page from last years calender that she keeps every year because it's her record system. On the front page it has a lot of information on how to do certain things. It says the most fruitful signs are Cancer, Scorpio,or Pisces with Taurus and Capricorn coming in second. These are for above ground crops. Then it goes on to give days and signs for root crops, days to set eggs, and days to weed, and on and on.
