gasoline w/o ethanol
Anybody know which gas brands DO NOT have ethanol in them? Also, why isnt it a law that they HAVE to put the 10% ethanol sticker on the pump?? I want to know what i am putting into my engine.

There are no more "OT"s in the posts. Thankyou.
Now to your question. Brands? I think it depends on what the station wants. I've seen various brands sans ethanol particularly in areas where it is in high demand for things like outboards, etc. Our local Southern States is the best place to get it.

Re: gasoline w/o ethanol
Around here ALL OF THEM say "ten percent ethanol added" as required by law. The only "straight" gas I know of is racing gas, available at OH MY GOD prices at a station around the corner from the local 1/2 mile dirt track.

In some areas, like here in the St Louis area, that's the only way it comes. Our pumps used to have that decal, but I've noticed they are starting to disappear. Guessing since there is no other choice the notice is no longer required. I also collect and run old outboard motors and many have cork carb floats sealed with shellac, not a good combination as alcohol is the solvent for shellac. Our only choices for no alcohol is at the airport, or around the larger lakes, neither one very inexpensive. Spending a fair amount of time resealing floats with model airplane dope.

One thing to remember, the brand name means little. Refiners sell and trade/repay, other refiners what they make. It might say ARCO, but it could be Chevron gas you're getting. Then there's all the mixing that takes place during pipeline shipments.

Here in north Arkansaw I buy the non ethanol gas at a Citgo station . There are getting to be more all the time around here. I have been using it for close to a year now. After the first full tank I could see a lot of improvement in my truck, mpg came up a little but the performance really came up.

In this neck of the wood (SW Washington) all the CENEX stations only have gas w/o ethanol.
I was recently to Minneapolis and most stations had a pump that did not have ethanol, and was 5 cents
a gal less expensive that the gas with ethanol.

Re: gasoline w/o ethanol
Around here in Central Oregon we used to have just one station (a Shell in Bend) that carried Non-ethanol, super. That was a 30 mile drive (each way) for me, but I have enough cans it would last a month. Now the unbranded station in Powell Butte carries it which saves me 40 miles of driving. I can't really see a performance hit in automobiles but the chain saws want the expensive stuff ($.20/gal surcharge to leave out the danged ethanol).

Re: gasoline w/o ethanol
The ethanol will deteriorate your rubber gas lines in about 5 years. You need to check the lines going into your gas tank on ATVs and UTVs especially or you could get stuck out in the middle of nowhere. I carry an extra one just in case after my first one fell apart.

I use avgas from the local airport.
Works wonders for older cars with high compression. Allows more spark advance, and better mpg. Higher calorific value too.
Dont put it in cars with a cat or O2 sensor.
Its great for lawn movers, generators, chainsaws that may be used infrequently..... the fuel takes a long time to go bad.

AVgas must still have lead in it. That is usually what takes out the cat converters, it plugs them up over time, and it will all of a sudden kill the engine.
Re: gasoline w/o ethanol
You're very right, RR7. Brazil was the pioneer in automotive ethanol. I had several cars running exclusively on ethanol before the alcohol program fell through. I hated them all. In modified vehicles, ethanol will corrode hoses, gaskets, gas pump components and the fuel tank. It will corrode piston heads and valves. It will corrode your pocket too, because mileage sucks. Ethanol-fueled engines will not start at temperatures below 50. It produces a disgusting gunk that will goo up your injector nozzles. It will corrode old carburetors completely. I drive an old 1998 Cherokee Sport with a straight-6 engine and never fed it anything but premium, ethanol-free gas. It has 64,000 miles in it. Spend more money at the pump, and no money with mechanics to clean nozzles and remove ethanol gunk. Brazilian law requires that gasoline contains 20% ethanol, except for the premium stuff.
Re: gasoline w/o ethanol
Around here the premium grade is ethanol free also the conoco station has avgas I guess for old cars that need lead. if you want to kill your mower, chainsaw, boat engine or generator use ethanol in them any small engine will die on that stuff especially the 2 stroke engines. In a emergency you could add octane booster to kick up performance. only engines that are designed for ethanol perform good on that stuff. danny

From the link above your post , there is one place on the west side of that "lil" State park that has it . Halpins <sp> in Forestport . I remember hearing comercials on the radio station at camp this fall. ( the Moose / wbrv ) .adirondakjack wrote:Around here ALL OF THEM say "ten percent ethanol added" as required by law. Re: gasoline w/o ethanol
What's all this rank talk about ethanol? Do you mean to say some of you would deny Archer Daniels Midland and the Big Corn industry its God-given cut every time you fuel up? That's darned near un-American!
Re: gasoline w/o ethanol
On the left coast, I'm not sure you can even find it sans alcohol. I know that when I get ready for the emissions test, a half gal of DNA in a quarter tank of gas will ace the test everytime. I fill up right after, tho....all that DNA is prolly not good for the engine.

Re: gasoline w/o ethanol
I live on the Texas Coast, and sport fishing is a major industry in our area, I would say 75% of the houses have a boat parked in front. We have 10% ethanol in ALL our gasoline. It is ruining many older outboards, small engines and older car/trucks. The feds are mandating ethanol, not the state. Thankfully, I have a new outboard and the gas tank/lines in my boat are ethanol resistant, up to a point. My old boat, its motor, gas tank and lines was trashed by 10% ethanol. Now, the feds are trying to foist 15% ethanol off on us. The boats/motors that can stand 10%, may well be trashed by 15%. The feds don't care, they are not interested in saving the sport fishing industry or fishing in general. Right now Texas is fighting Washington DC and the EPA trying to keep our refineries and petrochemical industry open. Let the EPA shut down our refineries and you are going to see fuel prices go throught the roof, because Texas refines most of the nations fuel.

Re: gasoline w/o ethanol
Blaine, I'll bet one of your friendly local loggers could tell you where to get premium non-ethanol. I would imagine all us chainsaw guys have searched out a source somewhere. If you can find it in the Soviet-Socialist State of Orygun you should be able to find a source anywhere...BlaineG wrote:On the left coast, I'm not sure you can even find it sans alcohol.

Re: gasoline w/o ethanol
You can tell if it is alcohol gas or real gas by your mileage. Here in Texas with my Toyota's I can tell quickly if the gas is real or not. 10% alcohol gas normally only gets me around 19mpg in my Highlander. Real gas gets me 24mpg. Buy a tank and look at your mileage. If it is doing well, it is real gas, if not it is alcohol gas due to the lack of energy in it. I find that in the 5 county area I live in we have environmental pollution controls so I normally get 19mpg. When I buy gas on the way to San Antonio, I commonly get 24mpg on the drive back and the rest of the tank till I burn it out.
38-55 & 38/44 What a combination!
Re: gasoline w/o ethanol
I believe it is the law that you have to label the gas/ethanol mix. Many stations hereabouts are advertising if they have gas sans ethanol.

Re: gasoline w/o ethanol
Brand seems to have little to do with it. Seems that most states are required to have 10% ethanol regardless of brand. There is an eception to the law that allows some gas stations to sell this pure gas to those using it in offroad vehicles, or collectors cars. Problem is there's so little demand that very few stations carry the good gas.
We have 2-3 stations within driving distance that carry it, but prices are a good $.70 a gallon higher than mixed gas. I use it in a couple of my older cars, or I get race fuel, but it's even higher!

Missouri does not REQUIRE labeling. It is optional at the dealer's discretion. Here in southern Missouri the top two grades are usually labeled but the lowest (81?) is not. Regardless of that my mechanic tells me that ALL the gasoline sold in this area contains alcohol labeled or not.

Re: gasoline w/o ethanol
Up here Shell premium is ethanol free. The two lower grades are ethanol laced. I suspect it is highly regulated by regional supply and regulation. I fool around with homebuilt/ultralight airplanes and the non-av gas users use Shell premium here as ethanol can be murder on aircraft carbs and fuel systems.
