A co-worked of mine calls me yesterday regarding about this leveraction that he has seen at a gun shop. He knows I'm into leveraction but he has never seen one in this caliber from this particular make and model. I asked him what was it???? Savage 99A 375 Winchester! So I talked to the gun shop owner for a bit and was able to put it on hold until I could see it, earliest would be Tuesday since he's closed Sunday and Monday. I was scratching my head last night looking on-line there are discrepancies on how many were built and when were they built. What I have is 1500 were built (give or take) and a period of 1979-1982?? Is that correct? I do have the SN# but Savage stop using the Bose Codes around the mid 70's to determine the built date. I know they are pretty rare at least in my area and I may have seen one from time to time on Auction Arms or Gunbroker and are very pricey so right now my mind is racing, heart is skipping and palms are sweating.

Sounds interesting. Did he mention condition etc? What was his price range? That would be a rifle that I would jump at if the price was something I could handle. Good luck and let us know how you make out on this.

The rifle has only been there a week. He's asking $1250 for it but I'm going with my co-worker says about the condition because he collects bolt action. No box or papers, couple of dents on the stock but excellent color, figure and nice grain, best he has seen on a Savage. No scratches on the barrel or receiver, screws look they haven't been messed around with and inside of the barrel is spotless. He thinks only a few rounds gone though it but he rates it at excellent condition and said I'll be a fool if I don't grab it. Easy for him to say!
Well after much thinking and pondering yesterday I reeeeeeeeeeeellly wanted to look at it. Turns out my wife and daughters took off Christmas shopping without me I said to them "I have some shopping of my own". Got to the gunshop in a nick of time he was about to close. After much debating, talking to the gunshop owner, we struck a deal on a trade and some cash. Take a look:
The rifle is in better condition than I thought. Other than a couple of scratches and dings it's perfect I couldn't be more happy One thing I have to say about the gunshop. I'm not much of a Winchester man, just Marlin and Savages but I was very imprested with his collection of nice Winchesters, the biggest I've seen!

Savage 99s are one of my few weaknesses (along with Marlin, Winchester, Remingotn...). And when you find one in an unusual caliber ... Well, there you have it! Congratulations!

ive only seen 1 of them & that had to be when they first came out
it was new & sitting there temping me but i passed on it
i know a little bout the 99, ive HAD a few including
a 22-250 & 284 ----- notice HAD

I think the Savage 99's are my favorite along with the Marlins. What amazes me is the stock! I have never seen such nice wood on a Savage in a long time!

Funny you should mention the 284, I was just doing a little
research on that round the other day. Seems to me that was and still
is a dandy little round. I was also racking my brain trying to think
of someone over the years that I knew that had one; I came up with
no one. I’ll bet that 284 was the cats meow in the 99.

I was looking into that round myself few weeks back after seeing one over at Cabelas on the used gun racks. It wasn't a Savage 99 but a Winchester 70 Featherweight, good price too!
Are you planning on taking it to camp in East Carry, or is it to nice for the thick stuff? What ever you do it is a beauty and quite the round too........good score......let us know how it shoots...........kevin

Oh I'm pretty sure I'll be bring it up! I have been reading two articles written by Ken Waters on the 375 Winchester. The first article he wrote he used an 94 XTR and reported very good results. The other article 4 or 5 years later he used a Savage 99A like mine but I was surprised he didn't get good accuracy using cast bullets. He didn't even post them, saying they were down right dismal and blaming the shallow rifling and fast twist rate (1 in 12). I was hoping to work up a nice cast load or two but it doesn't sound promising
