Whew!

Post by Swampman »

My son flys the F-15Es and I always get a little scared when I see the F-15s in the news. Thank goodness they weren't his planes, and thank goodness these local flyers are alive.

Glad he and they are OK Swampman! :) Stuff like that has to take some years off.

I am glad the pilots made it.

My brother is a F-15 mechanic in Afganistan(sp) at the moment. Maybe he has met your son somewhere, you never know.

I was an engine & prop mechanic on C-130 Gunships for the 1st Special Operations Wing. These news cast really get my heart pumpin' sometimes. He's still my boy, and he's got 3 kids of his own.

Always sad to hear.
My unit controls air for close air support missions. We are always hit hard when ever an aircraft goes down on our watch. Last time I was in the sand box we had several birds go down for different reasons really hits home especialy when you know who the pilot was.

Glad it wasn't YOUR son :) , but it was someones, still very sad.

Usually from these incidents, comes a great deal of learning. in this one death there may be dozens of other lives saved. Maybe some sort of technique, or maneuver that has a small, but deadly flaw to it, or maybe a procedure not followed properly.

It could also be some sort of flaw in the A/C as well that will be exposed to hopefully prevent this from happening again.

I am an air traffic controller, and back in '95 I was working as a quality assurance specialist, in ATC. part of my duties included being part of S&R missions, accident and incident investigations, some fatal, some not.

On one such investigation (fatal) I got a call from a Naval Commander (can't say where, cause the whole thing was classified), about an F-14 that had crashed while doing ACM maneveuers with an Air Force F-16. The F-14 got into a flat spin (yes like the one in Top Gun, cause I asked) and this pilot did the same thing tommy frst did, punched out, but the REO was hit by the aircraft after he punched out and was killed.

end result, they told me about a year later, that there were pilot techniques that were flawed and supposedly resulted in a slight redesign of the ejection process as well. The REO should never have died on that one.

Hopefully something can be learned from this one as well.

I am in aviation also, we all hate to hear about a bird going down unplanned; makes us feel like we did something wrong.
