OT A pic of young Tom

Post by Nath »

Saturday I spent £93 at the dealers on supplys :( I got some green dot to make use of the shot and wads and primers I have, 300 Eley subs 22s, 100 CCI standards to try, the ones with the long nose and 100 CCI mini mags I have wanted to try in my 9422. He had also got some Speer 170gr so I got 100 of them too :D I also got a Johnny Stewart pred call with a variable mouth peice.
Rob and I had arranged a lamping session for fox last night and the conditions could not of been worse. There was no wind ,a moon and a good freeze  We gambled on the fact that the cold would make'm hungry, I invited young Tom to walk with us as he is keen on shooting and it should be encouraged.
We visited 4 places and saw three but only got 1. The new call worked well but I do need to practice as soon as I am in the house alone
It took quite a while for the vixen to appear, we think she had come a good way. She could see us it was that light but the call kept holding her nice untill Rob could get one off on her at something like 80yds.
Good fun and it was nice to experiance some cold weather for once. It must of been -5ish which to some of you that would mean wearing speedo's  but for us- we could feel it
I was out first light Sat morning with my 30/30. I saw one and winded another  I'll keep trying

Well done Nath, we need all the new shooters we can get in the UK. I'm sure Tom will have the best inroduction to Hunting he can get! :D

We had a vermin drive here on Saturday. Saw three foxes but only stopped one. Just after we left for the first drive the Keeper who couldn't come with us shot a mangy flea bitten fox where we had just been standing drinking coffee! We saw another flea bitten fox in the same area when we came back. We suspect someone has let some town foxes out of traps, Darn bunny huggers! :x

I took my new 870 express 28ga in the morning but the Keepers dad kept calling it a Pu**y gun  so I swooped it for my 16ga hammergun in the afternoon.

Nath,
I must say, you boys have some healthly looking foxes. I get nothing but mangy critters here.
You say you spent 93 #'s on supplies. Out of curiosity, I'd like to see a partial breakdown on what ammo or powder costs there.-------Sixgun

Well Gk you have tastes Sir, how does that 870 feel then? What do you think of the 28? What load have you been using and how far does it shoot? It no P**sy gun, an 870 in anything is a good buy.
Sixgun, I don't think they live long enough  I have had the odd one with some mange but not often.
I got the green dot for £25 so thats about $50. For the various 22 ammo totaling 500 rds I paid £28 or about $56. The 170 Speers were £21 I think so $42. I guess it's double what you would pay :(

Nath,
The 870 Express handles real smooth and comes up like a custom gun!
In my old Rossi S/B 28ga I used 14 to 21grams but found Eley 16 grams to pattern well and I've killed rabbits at 40 paces but that was with full choke, the Remington is Modified choke.

Maybe Nath and Gamekeeper could set something straight for me. I was looking at a very nice English double 12 ga. once and it seemed to have a short chamber by American standards, I don't recall what it was. Anyway when I was talking to the man who was selling the piece he tried to tell me that in England they use lower weight shot charges than we do and that over there a 1 oz. load is extremely heavy. I was just wondering if either or both of you might comment on that?
I know for my uses a 20 ga. is really all I need for everything except turkey where a 12 ga is the rule. I'm actually about to change my feeling on that as well. I don't think I could go to anything smaller than a 20 ga. as I'm just not that good a shot.

That's a very nice picture of a happy young man. It sure is great to see a younger generation being brought up right.

Rusty,
English 12 bores were once chambered two and a half inch for a standard load of one and a sixteenth of an ounce. One and an eighth ounce was the usual load but one and three sixteenths was considered the maximum load for the two and a half inch chamber.
Now most guns are 3" or 2 3/4" and people here use all sorts of loads depending on the quarry!

Of course there was also the light weight 12 bore with a 2" chamber, they fired a 7/8 ounce load.

Gk has it Rusty, probs you was looking at a 2" chambered gun and the feller you was talking to had had to much scotch  (everybody is an expert as in X is the unknown factor and sPERT is a drip under pressure).
I can believe you Gk on the 40yd shot, I have seen real high pheas dropped from a gent whome only ever used a 28g. I admire you choice of gun and guage. How much if I may ask?
Deerwhacker, yep top pred with the badger a close second. Apparently we can't shoot badgers but i think it's a vicious rumour

Nath,
I paid £345 for the Remington I knocked him down from £395 and I used my .410 as £100 deposit. The Remington ain't new but as good as!
I've never seen a 28ga pump over here before so I may have paid a bit more than I should but I don't care if I get what I want!

It seems to me that very generally speaking you guys pay in £ what we pay in $ so that $25 is a reasonable (if a bit on the high side price here) and so forth.
Sincerely,

Hobie
