I had a run in with a little rattler. His 7 beads must surely be lucky because word is there is no sign of venom penetration where the one fang hit just above the boot, the other fang actually caught the very edge of the boot. A little kicking and stomping and I got back at the little bugger in a big way. I think I'm gonna eat this sucker too just because I can. Boy do I dislike snakes. This could have been much worse so for that I am very thankful.
Small puncture just above the boot with some discoloration and slight bruising:
Dang things! Little bugger probably took a nip at you because he was fearin' for his life but I don't care - I really dislike rattlers because they're more under foot than any daggum snake I know of.
Hope the little b*****d tastes really, really....satisifing! I'm thinking if the other fang hadn't hit boot, he might have got some poison in ya....Glad you're ok!

Ouch!
I forgot to remind you that the snakes in south Texas do not hibernate. They just keep on eating and growing and growing, etc. Also, after the sun sets during deer season they like to lie on the warm dirt and sand on game trails and ranch two tracks; always use a light when walking there after a day in the field to avoid even getting close to one of the grown up rattlers; they can easily reach up to your thigh above any boots.
BTW- It just occurred to me that your pictures appear to have been taken after dark, as in night. So you were wandering around in the south Texas brush after dark? mmm As previously ststed , not a good idea. It is hard to see a cow in the dark, much less a little ole' snake. Be more careful, Ricky and I need your help for a "tractor day" on the deer lease!

There's just somethin' about snakes (and spiders) that make people jump back. I believe its "genetic memory" over thousands of years of people dying from these things.
Really glad you're okay, Joe. I think I'd be changing my cowboy boots to some taller ones. If'n a little bugger like that can reach the top of standard boots. I've seen some huge Texas rattlers compared to the one you're holding, not to lessen your ordeal, but an invenomation by a big one and it's going to hurt for a long time.
The next day, a little more discoloration but just a tiny amount. The Doc was from NY also and put it in medical terms I can easily understand. He said, "there's lucky and there's f**king lucky. You're both". Revenge tastes pretty good!
Sir, you must have some Irish in you. Never been bit, but have come too darned close. I wish there was a rattlesnake vaccine for people like there is for dogs. I'd sign up in a heartbeat. My last close encounter ended well. For me, not the snake.
And before anyone asks, no I didn't eat it. I've tried snake, and if I were starving, I'd eat it again, but only then. Also, they DO NOT taste like chicken. Besides, the things just stink.

Rattlers are one of the things which I don't like anywhere around me. I have found that a shotgun dispatches them quite well, though.

Glad you are OK, I’ll bet that was an adrenalin flow scenario.
I did that once in Utah when walking point on a training operation, when I put my foot down knew that something soft should not have been on that rocky trail. I was luckier than you he was coiled with his head in the center and died before he could strike. All 8 of us ate snake that night as there were two more within 5 ft of him.
Wow Joe!!! I would have had to change my underwear. I am deathly afraid of rattlers, at least the ones I can't see. If I can see 'em I'm good. It's the fear of not seeing one that gets to me. Glad you are ok. Get some taller boots
