Range day with my oldest and newest 94!

Post by 2ndovc »

Got out with my new Winchester 94 / 45 Colt and my Grandfather's 1907 vintage 38-55.

Forgot to take my camera to the range this am. Beautiful morning. Even though it was only 19 degrees the sun was out and no wind.

Have been working on different loads for the 38-55. 24.5 gr. of 4198 and 225 gr Barnes sp. was @ 3" high at 50 yds. Should be right on at 100.

Also shot my new 45 Colt. Seemed to have a preference for the 300 gr. Hornady XTP over 21 gr. W296.
Have some work to do with this rifle. The trigger is horrendous! It's got to be at least 8 pounds! Not sure about that One Ragged Hole rear sight. My thoughts are that it would make a fine sight for a hunting rifle but not one intended for target shooting. I think I'll try it on my 30-30 Trapper.
Now What to do for sights on the 45? Have it worked over, remove the dopey tang safety and have a Tang sight installed or maybe one of those Malcom scopes by Leatherwood?

A good outing anyway.

2ndovc,

Love those old Winchesters. Especially when their owners actually shoot them.

As for the .45, first things first. Get the trigger pull worked over. It's very hard to shoot good with any kind of sights when the trigger pull is so heavy.
After that worry about the sights.
