My $300 1974 vintage 1895SS

Post by Swampman »

This had a broken stock and I got it cheap. I repaired and refinished the stock.

A straight stock 1895, THAT I like.

Good price too.

Looks great. I prefer the straight grip stocks.

My mother has the twin to that. It's been her deer rifle for the past 35 years or so. I wish marlin would have stayed with the straight stock, classy lines.

Best $300 you ever spent! :D

Nice job on the repair - the original 1895 re-intro. I like it!

Those have the "micro groove" rifling right? Maybe a little more finicky with cast bullets but still shoot them well when their sized a bit over bore.

I have a Lee 405 grain .459HB mold. I believe I can get it to shoot ok if I shoot them unsized.

I would think so.

Brian Pearce in Handloader has stated that he's had no trouble getting his to shoot - just need them over-bore diameter. But I've found that to be true for most all of my Marlins, Winchesters, Rossi, etc.

I like it as well. That forearm looks to be tastefully slimmer than the usual tree trunks that Marlin puts on most of their stuff too. I wish they made Marlins in this style again. Hopefully they will after Remington gets their quality control issues resolved.

Mine is from 1975, has a recoil pad and a steel Weaver K3 scope.

Image

I've had it for about 20 years, it's killed deer, hogs, and this kitty at 135 yards.

Image

I've never been able to get it to shoot well with cast bullets, but it shoots great with the Remington 405 soft point over H335.
