I became acquainted with the "grrl" who was to become my wife when I showed her a pre-owned pre-safety Winchester 94 at a pawn shop back in June 1997. (I moonlight in the daylight one day a week there; it has now gone totally over to jewelry.) One week later, we met so I could give her a photocopy of my 94's owner's manual, and that meeting evolved into our first date. On Valentine's Day 1998, she presented me with a Winchester Model 70 chambered in .375 H&H. Already a hog hunter, she had asked me for advice on a rifle that could be used to really stomp hogs, but also taken to Africa to shoot a Cape Buffalo. I did not realize she wanted to buy this rifle for me!
Well, I am a lefty with rifles, so the gifted Winchester 70 did not suit me, so it became her rifle, and I ordered myself a left-hand .375 H&H Winchester Model 70. We were married in July 1998; Valentine's Day 2008 was our tenth one celebrated together. It has been a bit rough at times, but in spite of both having multiple firearms about, we have yet to kill each other. Yesterday, I gave her a .32 H&R J-frame stainless Ladysmith. (She does appreciate pre-owned stuff, especially as this was an out-of production item.) We still have the 94 in the family; it didn't suit her Dad, so we kept it. We have yet to see Africa, perhaps someday. (Her Dad is too frail to travel, and cannot be left unattended.) Life is good.
