OT - Anyone know S&W serial numbers?

Post by Killer Kanuck »

Just thought I'd ask this very knowledgable and intelligent crowd (that enough sucking up for you  ) if anyone has any literature on dates of manufacture by serial number for Smith & Wesson top break revolvers(44 Double Action in particular).

If you are wondering where the cut-off for antique status is for the 44 DA top break, this came up on Canadian Gun Nutz a while back. I cannot recall the serial number where the cut off is, but if you post the question under the Blackpowder and Antique section, Dingus will know.

Actually did a little digging after I posted this and found that on GunNutz - looks like around 45,000.
I'm looking at one, but the seller doesn't know if it's 44 Russian or 44-40, so I'm going to have him measure the cylinder. The serial number is less than 10,000, so it could be either a 1st model or Frontier, so I'm hoping it's 1-7/16".

Low serial number and 1-9/16" - must be 44-40

45,000 does ring a bell. Hope it's a 44 Russian. If you need any 44 Russian loads, let me know.

No, it's a 44-40 - he confirmed it with the info I gave him. Although if I could get it cheap enough it would still be worth the import hassle.
