39A To be retired?
Is this true? Thanks. 1886.
I've found the new ones not to my liking. The ill fitting bland wood and the safety and those two extra holes on the side of the receiver: What's up with that?

The new ones I've seen have two screw sized holes in the receiver...left side, I think, and nothing goes there........At least I THINK I didn't dream these up........Leverdude wrote:I doubt it. Its kinda like their flagship, that & the 336.

Ok, one hole, then........At the front upper side of receiver. My older ones don't have this... You might have to save on your desktop and enlarge some to see it real good.

Yup, thats a gas vent. If you look at the other flat bolt Marlins the front of the bolt has a relief on the top & bottom to do the same thing. For whatever reason they didn't do that to the 39's & when they addressed the issue opted to drill a hole in the gun. I dont know why but thats what they did.
Yours dont have the hole?
I need to investigate. I thought they started that with the 39A.

I have CRS half the time. I'll check my older Mountie and 39A when I get home....If I remember, that is.Leverdude wrote:Yup, thats a gas vent. On the new 39AS's there is one for a gas vent and one for a "loaded chamber" indicator.
Here's a better picture from another forum.

Stopping production on the 39A would be like Ruger dropping the 10/22.

I'd be surprised if Marlin/Rem. dropped the 39a. It has the distinction of being the longest continuously produced rifle design in the world, as it's almost unchanged since it's original conception as the model 1891.
Pre WWI Marlins and Singleshot rifles!

The holes are loaded chamber and magazine indicators. You can see brass if there is a round in the chamber or magazine. If no round in the magazine you can see the red mag. follower through the hole.
Neither the holes or the safety bug me. I love my new 39A.
Oh above info is in the operators manual.

I truly wasn't 100% positive until I looked....only about 99%, but trust me, that 1% kicks my butt on a regular basis, especially if I've opened my mouth in front of friends.Chuck 100 yd wrote:Blaine, I think they just started making them that way in the last 4-5 years.

I think there were ruptures & the gas went straight back into the shooters face. This vents it out the side. My boys single shot crickit has a similar vent.Grizz wrote:Must be something to have some kind of .22 rimfire ammo that is so powerful that it needs a gas vent to protect the gun from harm.Chuck 100 yd wrote:Blaine, I think they just started making them that way in the last 4-5 years.
wowsers..,
I gotta go look at mine. I know its got the vent hole, or I think I know it does, but I want to see when it was made.
ok,
Mines an 82 & its got the one hole at the breech.
