I remember seeing it on cable not long after it came out, but for some reason I never picked it up on video or DVD until a couple of months ago. The only parts that stuck with me all this time were when he used the horse trough as cover and him walking down the street swapping cylinders in that converted Remington 1858.
Now I know where I got this fascination for Remington 1858s...

I've never seen Shane, perhaps I should try and find it.
I'm not a huge fan of the old westerns just because they feel "hokey" to me many times. (I will stop down for most of the John Wayne westerns so I'm not a complete heathen... )
As unrealistic as the older Clint Eastwood movies can be, there's a grittiness I can appreciate and the moral ambiguity lends an authenticity that can be found if you read up on how many scofflaws and law upholders worked both sides of the road "back then".

Clint DOES has a sense of what's "just right".
.
The entire film is a very poor "Shane" knock-off. Saw it once on cable TV back in Massachusetts. Once was more than enough for me.

Very poor Shane knock off? I never really understood the comparison and besides.......Shane has to be one of the worst westerns (and movies period) ever made. Man did it suck. No way was Pale Rider worse.

Heretics! Both of you
The worst western ever was the recent "3:10 to Yuma" remake and a close second was "Appaloosa" . Both were full of great actors but man, what a beatdown to watch!
Shane was pretty close to the book. I couldn't stand that little kid and despised his unfaithful mama. I guess the enjoyment was seeing all the old time actors who turned out to be big names later, if they weren't already.

+1 though I think you must mean among those big budget movies purported to be great, as there are plenty lesser B-grade and recent decade(s) straight to "video" fare to choose from for absolute worst Even so, surely The Quick and the Dead (# 2 - meaning 2nd time around. Stone's acting must've been worst ever)...must be in contention ahead of these! I was also afraid "Appaloosa" would singlehandedly undo the good will and support Open Range brought again to Hollywood western making, but True Grit 2 brought us back from doom! Appaloosa, perhaps unfairly, had so much hope and expectation pinned on it, it could hardly succeed. Like Vance suggests, these other movies were choc-full of good actors wallowing in horridly gone-wrong stories and production--well intentioned though they may have been.

"Pale Rider" had a plot? I thought it was just something about Clint's character whacking well deserving folks.
"Cowboys and Aliens" has people quivering. Word is it is not campy or played down at all, it's true, dusty and dirty old west. Director showed a ten minute clip at a convention and folks were going nuts over it.
Probably one of the few movies I'll go see on the big screen this summer.

Wow, we'll have to agree to disagree...
I really liked the remake of 3:10 to Yuma -- especially the nifty Schofields!!!
As for the "worst" on my list -- Appaloosa gets the nod for that, with Lonesome Dove * coming in a close 2nd.

Like I said, we probably won't agree on this...
I did like Pale Rider though.

I know a lot of people liked 3:10 to Yuma. I just don't get it If I remember right, I thought some of the gun action was ridiculous. I generally like Russell Crowe and Christian Bale movies. I like Pale Rider, too. I remember the plot, but I'm sure the subplots were lost on me.
When Lonesome Dove came out, I did not appreciate it. It came on at a time when broadcast TV claimed to have a family hour of fare from 7pm to 9pm. Whew! Every woman was a wh*** and every other word was poke. Watched it years later and enjoyed it more (no little ears around) but it was just okay. I was too critical, because I know for a fact there are no mountains in Miles City.

I've watched Pale Rider a number of times. It's just one of those westerns that you watch to be entertained. Not to pull a message out of it or be educated.
310 to Yuma, the remake made me want to wretch. All the period guns and clothes cannot make up for the crappy acting.
I class all westerns in the category of nonsensical entertainment. I don't take them seriously. I either like them, or I dont'.
One of my most despised westerns is John Wayne's "The Cowboys". I hate that western. The plot sucks and Bruce Dern just makes me wanna shoot the TV screen.
So what can I say?

Is that the one where he hires the kids to do the cattle drive? I never cared for that one either.
that movie would have been better if the kids were a little older....
although....those kids back then could probably handle it better
than most kids today...

I'd make that Studebakers and Grape NeHi!!!! As a Chevy & Coca-Cola person, I liked all the movies mentioned here... maybe I'm too easily pleased, but... movies are for escaping into... analyzing them and trying to put meanings to them I'll leave to brainiacs.

There is a fine line between hobby & obsession! AND... I'm over it!!
No I ain't ready, but let's do it anyway!
Not a huge Clint Eastwood western film fan, I like him and he is an awesome actor, I just think most of them are plotless and they make everyone that lived in the west are a bunch of wierdos, midgets (probably not politically correct haha sorry if I offend), mental issues and mentally unstable. However I really liked The Unforgiven by far my favorite Clint movie.
I dont understand why they have to remake movies all the time. It seems like they are just playing it safe. There are so many Louis Lamour books that they could use!! Tom Selleck and DuVall need to do more westerns! and where is Sam Elliot????? haha lets all raise our kids to love westerns so we will have new ones to watch when we retire!

Over and Out
Tom Selleck is trying to get the rights and funding for "Empty Land" a Louis Lamour novel...
However...because Camanche Moon did so terrible...the money side of the game
would not shell out the cash for production.....
Maybe with remake of True Grit...and if it brings in enough cash....
they just might get a second chance....
