Posting of recent Range Season per KirkD suggestion

Recently I pulled a couple of rifles out of the safe just for fun. Due to snow on my own range, I was limited to 60 yards.

First rifle is a 1893 vintage Winchester 1886 in 40-65. Load was a 260 grain Cast Performance GC FN pushed by a charge of IMR 3031.

Next is a 1905 vintage Model 1894 Winchester Takedown shooting a 250 gr Cast Performance GC FN. Powder was again IMR 3031.

Fed the right ammo, these old guns will still shoot.

I love to see those old classic Winchesters and their targets. Where do you get gas checks for the 40-65?

Kirk,

I buy Cast Performance Bullet's, .410 diameter, 255 and 260 gr WFNGC bullets. They are available from a number of sources, Midway being just one. These are manufactured to be shot in the .41 Magnum Pistol Cartridge. I run them through a .409 sizer die and shoot them in my original 86 40-65's and 40-82's. Works like a charm.

I shoot CPB's bullets in my 38-55's too. They shoot very well.

I have found gas checks to be a huge improvement over plain base bullets for these old guns....especially those with worn or pitted bores.

Those gas checks really do help with these old guns, no doubt about it. I just wish they weren't so expensive. I've been slowly going over to plain base bullets, just to save money. The only calibers I still use gas checks for are the 30-30 and the 25-20. Those two pretty much require gas checks so there's no getting away from them for me.

Nice shooting..Nice guns..Thanks for the report...Getting ready in one last desperate try to get my 73 44WCF to shoot lead bullets..Got a GC mold & GCs on the way..

Ben, I'm looking forward to seeing how those GC' bullets work in your old '73. Keep us posted.
