Re: Prayer Request - Adirondak Jack
Well, I was pleasantly surprized this morning. After nearly 5 weeks since the presumptive diagnosis of cancer, waiting on the surgery (which ia altogether too much time waiting, as it wears on ya), The process itself was very smooth.
I reported at 6:45 AM for an 8:00 "trans-urethral tumor resection" and was awake in recovery by 9am, felt good, and by 10AM we were on our way home. Talk about a "speed stage", LOL. Of course I got a catheter for a couple of days, but all in all, the anticipation was far worse than the procedure.
Doc told the better half that the surgery went well, they got it all, no complications, and I ought to get a pathology report on Thursday when I go back to the doc for catheter removal.
It sounds very much like I will ALWAYS be a "cancer patient", but with adequate follow-up observation, frequent scoping with his magic wand (80% do come back, so ya gotta catch them early as well and remove em as need arises), I'll likely die of something else and never be "sick" because of the bladder cancer.
Thanks so much for all the good words, prayers and thoughts. Wish me luck when I go for the pathology report.....
Now I gotta just do not a whole lot for a few days.....
Now, lemme make a very serious recommendation. If you ever see or a doc tells you you have microscopic blood in your urine, DO NOT let em tell ya "it's probably a UTI". Insist on a urologist consult and a cystoscopy, PERIOD. Most of these things occur after age 60, but I'm 54, and it has happened to folks even in their 20s. NEVER let a doc pooh pooh it, and NEVER delay if ya see blood even once.
I saw blood once, they found microscopic blood ONCE, and two follow-up tests for microscopic blood came back clear. The doc THOUGHT it was an infection that had already cleared, but cystoscopy which he performed only as a "rule-out" precaution found the tumor early, and likely saved my life.

Re: Prayer Request - Adirondak Jack
Congrats to you Jack, I was 39 when I started having bladder issues and as you said the Dr poo pooed the blood and stuff. He did put me on every antibiotic I had ever heard of and by the time they did the scope, my bladder was positively full of tumors and I had 13 unfinished anti-biotics in my dresser drawer. Guys if you see blood follow jacks advise and go get scoped IT AIN'T FUN BUT.......neither is chemo or radiation treatments. God Bless Jack.
I will tell ya the best day of your life is gonna be on Thursday when they take the catheter out.
Jack I know lots of people don't speak up for themselves but tell the Dr or nurse who takes the catheter out to cut the one way valve off of the lumen that is used to retain the catheter. It is much easier on the pt and tell them "hey you aren't gonna re-use it anyway -Right". Just a suggestion from a Pt who is also a nurse. God Bless. Tom

Yep, the catheter ain't fun at all. But there was no way to avoid it except keeping the tumor.....
Oh, don't worry about me speaking up, lol. I got teased today when I was asked if I wanted coffee and a muffin in recovery. "lemme see, baked goods in a hospital? How about toast instead? You can probably manage toast." (which she went to the break room and made herself)
The nurse teased me about criticizing the kitchen (FWIW head of dietary there is a friend of mine but I know better than to expect "real" food). I said "Hey, with the prices you charge here, the food ought to be as good as "The Waldorf". When it comes to care, I'm a CUSTOMER, and expect quality with no excuses.

Glad everything went well - and that while you are uncomfortable, it's a temporary thing. Very good!
I am also a cancer patient - having the propensity for skin cancer and will have to keep an eye out for this from here on. And I only 50...
We just have to be glad that its something that can be treated - becoming "just" a bother or even a challenge rather than the alternative.
At some time in my life, later on I will be ready to depart, but I'm not there yet
Sounds like you aren't either.

Re: Prayer Request - Adirondak Jack
Well, today was lousy. The darned catheter kept plugging up, which you find out when you have an emergency urge and you end up bypassing it in an uncontrolled "explosion". THAT will bring tears to yer eyes and make yer mouth water from pain. Couldn't reach the doc, so after 5 episodes of that nonsense and a bit of online research, tonight I snipped the valve to the bulb and removed the cath. Doc was gonna take it out tomorrow anyway, so I only cheated his schedule by 12 hours. MUCH better, thanks. Tomorrow I go in to HOPEFULLY get the pathology report.....
OSOK, I'm 54, and intend to be around a good while. Yep, I'll likely end up "managing" this malady or at least always vigilent, if not actually cured, but it won't get me, at least not any time soon. I got other plans. Do you remember Nelson Rockafeller? Now there was a man with an exit strategy. Something to do with a lovely young secretary, alone with him in the evening in his private art gallery when "the big one" hit....
UPDATE: Back from the doc with good news.
He removed a tumor about an inch in diameter, but still low grade, and not penetrated beyond the lining of the bladder. "See ya in 3 mos to scope it". Pathology says stage 1 or 2, not aggressive, and doc says low grade. IF ya gotta get cancer, this is the kind ya want. It will likely come back at some time, but he'll be happy to cut it again, and it will likely still be low grade, early stage when he does.....
So, I gotta take a bit of time to heal up, but then it's back to the salt mine.....
Thanks to all of you for your kind words and good thoughts. It's been one of those "life-changing" times to be sure.
