that's a pretty deep web site, you can submerge pretty far into some very heavy equipment. yeeehaw.... I guess that's what weekends are for. I'm amazed at the focus and the tenacity of the folks who rescue and run those amazing machines.
You not only have great trains, but you have a canal system that I would love to explore. Do you do any canal cruising?
England has a diesel train with a very unique engine that makes a very unique sound. But I can't remember what it's called and have lost the bookmarks. The sound is awesome. Do you know it?

Pitchy, I know what you mean by "in boxes". Soem time back, I had an entire room dedicated to my HO set. A thing of beauty, with trains running along all four walls. I had to remove the door to the room, and the closet door. I actually entered by crawiling underneath it. But alas, my wife decided we really needed a "guest" room. So I've ben banished to the garage, and what I could set up on an 8x10 base. It's hung from the rafters and I can lower it to run it. Somehow, it just isn't the same, and truth be told, I'll go months and not run anything.

I should take a photo of the set up to which my friend is moving his trains from his "living room". We saw layouts in Phoenix that were measured in acres...

Perhaps the English Electric Deltic?
The link to the MidContinent site reminded me of my Dad and Grandpa. Grandpa wanted to make a last trip to the town he was raised in, to select a gravesite. I was along and badgered them to take me to the museum to ride behid their 4-6-0, and Grandpa liked the idea. Grandpa and I road the train; Dad as always was too cheap to buy a ticket, so Grandpa treated me. I miss them.
Didn`t realize this thread was for trains only, sorry.

I think it is pretty hard core when you are one of the guys that collects Winston O. Link's recordings of steam engines... Yep, this is such and such engine going up such and such grade... don't ask me how I know.

NOT TRAINS ONLY
not even steam only, it's whatever machinery triggers the guy genes, with a train site for the opening kickoff...

I think the deltic is the one. A totally unique engine with a totally unique sound. if it's the one I couldn't remember.....
let's see some more great stuff if we haven't exhausted the subject...
there was a steam powered aircraft, but the weights didn't work out and gasoline engines won the weight to hp issue. I wonder if modern technology... nah, I don't think we can beat the calories in a gallon of gas. but maybe, a very small unit might work in an ultralight....

yup, Deltic is it:
does anyone have the sound track? it's a stunner.

I posted a bunch of pictures of steam engines that i built or bought, the first one had a oscillating cylinder on it like the very first trains had.
Go to the trouble of digging out old photos and posting them and no one said a word.
So thought this was trains only.

Thanks and anyone is welcome at my home, i`ve sold all my engines other than a hot air engine. Bad family issues have forced me to sell things including putting the place on the market.
Used to have six oil field engines too, Bessemer's, Reeds , Fairbanks, Innis, Marian, smallest flywheel was five foot.
I`m just barely hanging in there so forgive me if i`m cranky once in a while and i`m just trying to contribute to the board with my pics.
I sure like those train sets they are awesome.

If you're into trains, you should really try to make it out to Old Sacramento to visit the California State Train Museum. When we lived in the Bay Area, I'd drive the family up to Sacto and the kids really loved that area. Besides the trains, you can see the western terminus of the Pony Express as well as a neat Old Town area.

Grizz, the basic principles of the Deltic's engine -- the opposed piston -- were during WW-II used in German bombers and in US submarines, and after the war it was used in US locomotives. Napier seemed to have a fetish for packing as many cylinders into an engine as they could, eg. the Sabre aircraft engine and the Deltic diesel. I guess old Enzo caught the bug from them, with his 1.5 L V-12 sports car engines (too much of a good thing, really).
Those steam engines are neat. When gas and diesel and gone, you'll be able to build the things again.
You've done more in your lifetime than many others could in 10 lifetimes. When TEOTWAWKI happens you'll have the smarts to survive and thrive. 99.99% of the rest of us will be far worse off.

A model A snowmobile? Now that's something you don't see every day.
I guess the modern stuff is more efficient, but the old engines are cool.

Isnt it amazing how many people post without reading the thread?
