OT - Ruger Old Army's problems from factory

Post by Texican »

Since the ROA 'retirement' from the catalog, I can't seem to get them out of my head. When I come across one at a shop or gunshow I ask to inspect (fondle) them, particularly the stainless fixed-sight models. I've only seen two in the last two months or so and both have had the same problems from the factory. These were from two different dealers from different parts of the state and I believe two different distributors (I asked).

1) Rust in the bore. 2) A buggered hammer pivot screw.

To the first: I know all guns are proofed before leaving the factory but with potentially-damaging hygroscopic BP, you'd think they'd swab the bore at least.

To the second: the damage was obviously due to the assembler not changing to the proper size screw driver from the other two frame screws. The 'buggering' was the exact width of the smaller screw heads. It surely illustrates that a single lazy employee can damage a company's hard won reputation.

I love my Ruger SA's (and DA's and autos), they've been good to me. I've owned many of them in my 15yrs of SASS competition and not one of them ever wore out. But this is the first time I've ever seen a repeated lack of proper care and inspection from the factory.

With all the extra attention these guns are getting these days, has anyone else noticed such ROA problems or did I just happen to run across two 'Monday/Friday' guns?

I was at the gun show in Greensboro today. Saw one stainless steel ROA, and darn near fainted when I saw the price - only $359 - for what looked like NIB. Then I looked down the barrel - and it was a rusted mess!

I didn't realize this was a reoccuring problem with these guns. :(
