I'm not a carpenter - My 10-gun rack - Completed 3/11/11
Maybe someone will recall my dilema from several weeks ago where I was shopping around for an LR-308, got bored, found my credit card, and then "a deal" on several AR lowers (including the 308 ) on Gunbroker.
My FFL asked if I was going to sell them or start a militia. I built them up and ended up with a pile of EBRs.
As you can see, my litttle corner stand that I keep guns I'm "working on" in, can hold no more. BUT there is "open space" on the wall in the closet just behind...
So, after recent conversations about "Sheriff" style wall racks, I decided to try my hand at something similar. I have a requirement that the rack be short enough to stand a Trapper length lever-gun or a carbine length AR-15 (for obvious reasons). I also wanted 10 slots wide enough to hold the AR15's with some accessories. My 3 current gun racks/cabinets seem to have narrow slots that don't readily accomodate a "wide" rifle. Here's my evening's work. A frame. It's currently 42" long and about 30" tall.
Trying to decide what to do with it now that doesn't require a great amount of skill.

Looks good so far. Here is a site you might be able to come up with some kind of idea on what to do
next. I built one of there racks in an afternoon and it came out great. I started using it at deer camp to hold everyone's guns.

Re: I'm not a carpenter
Many years ago, I built a similar long gun rackand place the base of it on a shelf in a locked closet where I kept other gun paraphenalia. This worked great for years until some teenage burglars broke in and stole all my long guns ,some pistols, and ammo.
But for some outstanding work by our local police, who saw the boys playing with the guns while driving about town, they would all have been gone for good. All my stored guns now reside in locked safes, except for those in a display case where our Cone Corso, Bleubelle, sleeps.

Looks like a job well done! Over the years I have noticed that "gun guys" also like working on cars/trucks/jeeps and are usually handy at building things in general. In other words, we are "survivors"
Lets talk about the heavy looking EBR towards the front. .308? what kind? Hows it shoot?
Have you heard about the new Colt SP 901 in .308 thats going to hit the market soon?--------Sixgun

Re: I'm not a carpenter
I can't remember where I read it, but one guy installed a truck toolbox in the floor of a closet, between the studs. Replaced the wood on top that he glued together into a hatch, and carpetted it. Completely invisible, and not too difficult to get into.
He didn't use a rack, he just kept the weapons in regular zip up cases.
Just an idea,
Mark

Re: I'm not a carpenter
That's the DPMS LR-308 that I started out to build when I dropped my guard on Gunbroker and bought all the AR-15 lowers, LOL. It's a WONDERFUL gun. I've only had it out plinking using Remington/UMC 150 FMJ, but so far it seems to shoot straight and hit hard. I started building it with a plan to set up for hog hunting, and it looks like it's gonna work juuuuust fine.Sixgun wrote:Lets talk about the heavy looking EBR towards the front. .308? what kind? I stole a closet down the hall to stuff a gun cabinet into a few years back. She took another one to store her arts and crafts junk. (Who needs linen anyway?) We bought a new house last summer, so now I have a whole room (and the closet in the room too). And so does she.pwl44m wrote:FW, just be careful filling up closets with Guns- Wife might not like it. Re: I'm not a carpenter
Do you have a jig saw? Next step would be to cut the slots for the guns in a separate board and then attach it to the rack you've built. Alternatively, you could use wood pegs and a drill, spacing them as desired. Looks good so far!
Re: I'm not a carpenter
A little bit of progress. I added a bottom, sides, and notched "rack" board w/ 3" holes on 4" centers.
Need to sand the edges on the notch board and add a trim piece to the front bottom, then decide whether I want to finish or stain it before hanging it on the wall and loading it with firearms.
win38-55, I got at least one good idea from the link you provided. Thanks much for your help.
Still trying to decide how to address the issue of concern in CRS informative note.

Re: I'm not a carpenter - My 10-gun rack - Completed 3/11/11
I finished my 10-gun rack earlier this evening.
Last week I got the sides and bottom screwed down. Yesterday, I put a little trim piece and some spacers on the front. I guess it's not really trim because it's not intended to be decorative, it's more of a "kick-plate" and is intended to block the toe of a rifle butt from sliding off the rack.
Then I put some stain on it, mainly so that my wife would stop telling me that I should stain it.
I mounted it on the wall and loaded it up.
Now I have room in the little corner rack that I moved these from for something else.
Thanks for letting me share.
