OT – Gunny, check this out! (picture heavy)
As many of you know, I’ve enjoyed refinishing a couple guns for my children. I wanted their first guns to be from me, and be something special. Y2K’s (my son’s) first gun was a Marlin Model 15YN “Little Buckaroo” bolt-action .22 rimfire. Even though this was a youth model, when he first started shooting regularly at about 4 years old he was unable to shoulder the rifle properly and still reach the trigger. I obtained a second stock from Marlin and cut it down to fit him. Since Marlin was kind enough to provide this free of charge (a factory second), I spend some money on getting furniture for the gun that was originally meant for a youth-sized traditional muzzleloader, specifically a brass butt plate, patch-box and trigger-guard. Additionally, Y2K wanted the rifle decorated like an Indian war rifle with brass tacks. It looks very cool. Here he is about 5 years ago with it.
And here he is shooting it.
This really gave me the bug to do this for my daughter too, as the project was a lot of fun. She had seen a pink-stocked .22 rifle at a gun show with me, but they wanted $200 for it and it certainly wasn’t worth it for a bolt-action .22 that had a lot of cheap plastic parts on it. Besides, I wanted her first gun to be personalized from her Dad just like her older brother’s first gun. I did not cut down this one, as she uses her brother’s right now and it will be a rifle she can grow into. She was very happy when she received it for Christmas a couple years ago!
Again, these are fun projects, so I decided to do another one for me, one I’ve wanted to do for quite some time. A couple months ago I asked Jeremy a question about painting a camouflage pattern on a firearm. As usual, he gave a lot of good advice. Here’s the results:
The gun is a Marlin-Glenfield Model 25 magazine-fed bolt action .22 rimfire. I picked it up used at my local candy store, for a very reasonable price. It was actually in very good condition, but had just been refinished – so no issues with finishing it to my liking. Here it is before I started, with a bipod and scope that I added.
First, I sanded the stock a bit to rough it up so it would take the paint.
I removed the bolt, stock swivel and butt plate, then taped off the parts of the scope and gun I didn’t want to get paint on.
The first coat was Krylon flat-black. This was the base.
I decided to use spray-on black “plastic-dip” for the butt-plate and bolt handle.
I waited for the black to set for several days (mainly because I was traveling last week). Yesterday I put tape stripes on the gun and scope. Here’s what that looked like:
Next came the top coat, which was Krylon flat green.
And here is what it looked like when I was finished.
A better shot outdoors in natural light.
And finally, just so you know it’s me!
So Gunny, what do you think?
And here he is shooting it.

Wrey nice!
I've been thinking about doing something like that too.
How about a closeup of the bolt with the plastic dip
and how do you like the bolt now?

I'll snap a few. I need to trim it a bit where the bolt stem meets the bolt body. A little stiff. I took it down to the basement to test fire it into the target box I have there. Y2K was eager to see it in action. I fired one shot (Aguila "Colibri" ammo). He said "Dad - you missed!". I just smiled and said, "really?", having see where the shot landed. We walked up to the target and it was dead center on the bullseye. The scope was still right on!bsaride wrote:Wrey nice!

Honestly, I thought I got lucky. So I let him fire the next shot, and he put it through mine! I love this gun!!!

Jay that came out awesome. I very much like the tiger stripe pattern. I am thinking of repainting my .223 coyote gun and may borrow that technique from ya.
I am loving that Center Point scope you have on there. I just put one on my .223 and need to get it to the range to dial it in.

Awesome painting/stock work, YK. Come summer, I'm definitely going to emulate some of your work.

...looked cool, too; I could see a gun in the bright blue and black colors like that, actually.

That's what my daughter said too. She's like one with black stripes and an orange field. "Real" tiger stripes! Will put it on the list for her - perhaps a shotgun with that set up.AJMD429 wrote:THIS picture...
