Would you fit the stock first before finish?
I am getting ready to send my receiver off to get it Color Cased. Someone mentioned to me the other day that I should fit the stock to the receiver first so I dont scratch it. That seems like a good idea. What do you guys think?
I am putting off on that stock because I have never fit one to a rifle and I guess im afraid of messing it up. I have never worked with wood.

I would definitely fit the stock first. I've scratched too many receivers trying to get the wood to metal fit perfect.

Just go easy. You can always take more wood off, but you can't put it back on.

Unless you're plating the receiver, fit the wood first. If you've done the polishing on the receiver, get some of that heavy blue masking tape to cover the metal when you do the final fitting of wood and wood finishing. That way you won't scratch the polishing nor get the stain or oil on the metal.

Thanks for the tip. I have plenty of the tape around. The receiver is getting Color Case Hardened.Griff wrote:Unless you're plating the receiver, fit the wood first. Rube,
I second the thought about looking at treebonecarvings web site for instructions on fitting and glass bedding the stock on lever guns. I followed his instructions when re-fitting the stock on an 86 picked up at a gun show that had a badly fitted, new stock and fore-end. Glass bedded it per instructions and it looks and shoots great. ( see my post for picture and target)
