So tell me.....

Post by Nath »

Did the western states take to levers first or the easten states. I can imagine westeners taking to them because of packing well on a horse amongst other reasons but what about back east? What was the sporting shooting popular in the easten states at the time of the Winchesters and Marlins arrivals? Was the shotgun more used in the east? Did M/L rifles hold on longer in the east compared to the west?

THE EAST TOOK TO THEM FIRST AS HUNTING GUNS AS THAT IS WHERE MOST OF THE PEOPLE LIVED.
TEXAS TOOK TO REPEATERS AS COMBAT WEAPONS IN A BIG WAY AS THERE WERE LOTS OF FOLKS IN TEJANOLAND THAT NEEDED SHOOTING. [ THERE STILL IS TRUTH BE TOLD...]
THE SHOTGUN WAS ALWAYS POPULAR AS IT DID EVERYTHING WELL AND YOU NEEDN'T BE AN EXPERT TO HIT SOMETHING WITH IT.
IN THE EAST AND WEST THE MUZZLELOADER, LONG GUNS AND HANDGUNS, HELD ON A LOT LONGER THAN MOST IMAGINE AS POWDER , LEAD, AND CAPS WERE ALWAYS A HELL OF A LOT CHEAPER THAN AMMUNITION. LOADED AMMUNITION HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN EXPENSIVE COMMIDITY RELATIVELY SPEAKING.
MY GRANDDADDY USED C&B REVOLVERS WELL INTO THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE 20th CENTURY.

I think the Single and Double Barreled shotguns(the former being #1) were the most prolific arms in America, East and West. They were the everymans gun.

The East is/was Wilder than one might think with a great amount of hunting and big game, and Lever Guns made as much(if not more) sense than anywhere else. You still see many on the gun racks here. Ditto to what Terry said on the Black Powder stuff in the East.

PS: this is NOT the opinion of an expert, but is what I've witnessed, so value accordingly  .
