Totally, totally 'OT' - for those in Grizzly Country

Post by AJMD429 »

I just read on one of those "trivia calendars" that:

"Grizzly bears eat as many as 40,000 moths every day."

Was this a misprint...? Moths...?

:?:

(I mean really, I could see butterflies, but not moths... :? )

I always thought they ate nuts and berries, and other things that tried to eat nuts and berries when they were around.

Have to read up on that myself. I can see where they would eat caterpillars, grubs, and chrysalis (sp?) but a nasty, dusty moth! Yuk.

Ive seen them digging and turning over rocks to get to them above timberline in the absarokas north of the park I have no idea how many they eat but it must be a bunch they are at it all day long. I have also seen them go after lady bug swarms in the bob marshall. danny

I saw that on Nature once too, had a hard time believing it till I saw it. Who would have ever thought.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Moths are nectar collectors but on a smaller scale than bees. I think they said they have ~2 calories each. I would guess if a bear were trying to fatten up, anything less than 20,000 calories a day would be a waste of energy to flip the boulders over to collect them. So that is a minimum of 10,000 moths anyway.

All bears are "pigs of the forest". They'll eat anything that's even close to edible and some things that we humans wouldn't even touch.

I was fascinated to learn this when I saw it on Nature also. It is an incredible world.
