10,000 frames / second camcorder: catch a bullet in flight.

Post by wavetrain75 »

Just noticed that my hi-def camcorder can be set to 10,000 frames per second.

On a good day a 230 grain slug from a .45 acp might hit 1000 feet per second.

In 1/10,000th of a second that same slug is traveling about 1 1/4 inch.

So it would be a little blurry, but I should be able to pick up a bullet in flight. I'll have to try it next time I"m out.

Good luck. Try to stand off to the side, not in front.
How do you do that? Shoot picture for a second and scan the frames? Sounds fun. :)
I'll be waiting.

I'll set it up on a tripod and get various angles of someone else shooting. The I can use Final Cut Express editing software on a Macintosh to slow it down or pull out individual frames. Not sure how well it will work since the software works in 30 frames per second, but I'll find out.

Wow, makes me not all that sad I never got that 'high-speed' 35mm SLR camera I wanted back in 1974 - it had a shutter speed of 1/1000th of a second instead of just 1/250th like mine did. And that was a FILM camera, taking ONE picture at a time, and cost some $400 or so back then...

I guess whenever you plop down the $$$ for cutting-edge technology in the electronic-gizmo department, your being on the top of the heap will be fairly a brief phenomenon - if I'd bought that camera it would be totally obsolete for most purposes by now.

I saw an advertisement for a new camera with a shutter speed so fast that you can take a picture of a woman with her mouth closed ! Amazing !!!

It will help if you can get the sun coming from behind the bullet.
Every once in awhile the light will get right and you can pickup the bullets in flight at a bpcr match.

Sometimes with the atmosphere, foreground contrast, and lighting being coordinated , you can see a 30 cal at 2700fps until its too far a way to see. Id guess for 50-100 feet. Dont expect to see much detail, but youll see a gold/copper streak about 1/2 the time. Blinking at the shot will cause you to missit. Its usually a high sun somewhat behind you, dry clear air helps too. Seem to remember that a nice clean uncluttered green foreground is essential.

When we are night shooting fox I very often see the base of my pals bullet lit up by my strong flashlight. I know it's a hit or miss before it gets there but can't get the words out quick enough

Sometimes I will see a grey streak of a 22 when we rabbit shoot at night too.
