Half magazine conversion of Rossi M92?
Hi everyone, I did a search but found no topics on this.
I'm interested in buying a Rossi in .357 and doing a half mag conversion. I saw an original Winchester down at SAR in Phoenix and it tickled my fancy.
Has anyone here done this, and do you have pictures?
I have a full machine shop and a pretty good idea what needs to be done, but I'm just looking for anything specific that might trip me up.
Thanks, Mike

Our own Nate Kiowa Jones (Steve of Steve's Gunz) is 'The Rossi Specialist' and you could give him a shout as I'm sure he's done one for at least one of his customers.

We discussed this and doing trappers, etc. a way back. Folks even had a multitude of photoshopped guns just to get an idea of what their "favorite" would really look like. Are you doing this on a rifle or a carbine?

Its a piece of cake. I converted a half mag '94 Marlin to full mag. Bought a new tube from Marlin and filed a dovetail towards the end of the barrel. Just reverse the process for the way you want to do it, but in your case, you won't need to buy another tube.-----------Sixgun

Since I started with a 16" Big Loop .357 Carbine, my button mag conversion oughtta qualify as a half mag.
I used my $1.29 hacksaw, to shorten the issue mag tube; my $4 Chinese milling machine (file) to cut a female dovetail in the barrel bottom to accept the forend cap hanger; and my plastic to buy the forend cap/hanger & screws from a parts house for about $17.
I handmade a slightly large-headed screw, to retain the mag tube in the forend cap's inside groove under recoil & mag spring pressure.
OH...... and, I had to slightly rasp down the forward couple inches of forend wood, to be flush with the new forend cap, stain the area to match the rest, and apply stock finish.
It's probably not the way to do it, but whadda I know ?

Looks like it WAS 'the right way', since it worked...!

Love the button mag! If I had the equipment and the skill to do it, I'd like a Rossi 92 converted to a short rifle (20"), 1/2 octagon barrel, button mag. and rechambered to .38 Spl. I have a half-round, half-octagon Rossi 24" rifle in .45 Colt...been seriously thinking about doing a button mag and having a front sight dovetailed onto the barrel. Maybe a Beech sight coupled with a folding semi-buckhorn and a nice tang peep.

Welcome to the fire! Another recommendation for Nate Kiowa Jones (Steve Young). He does fantastic work!
Re: Half magazine conversion of Rossi M92?
That looks really good Pete.
My original plan was to use a 20", but your modified handguard makes the 16" appear to have decent proportions.
ETA: Did you notice any change in accuracy or POI due to the removal of the upper band?

Thank you...........
The only things that were changed by the customizing were the looks and (of course) the reduced magazine capacity ( 4 ILO 8 ) - which doesn't bother me in the least, since I no longer vacation in S.E.Asia , AND, in over 45 years, I've rarely had a chance to get off more than two aimed shots at any deer I was trying to bag.
They were either down or long gone................
