Times change - this is how we did it in 1934 - usually had my dog along but she didn't get in the picture - taken in the Sandhill cattle ranching country in Nebraska. There was an effort to wipe out coyotes - which failed - but the reduced population of them gave me an abundance of Jack Rabbits to shoot.
.22 LR ammo was four bits per box of 50 and shorts were only two bits and money was scarce - required head shots but made us better shooters -
