Re: OT - Marine dies defending wife
When the murderer is found, he should be given a fair trial, found guilty, and punished by the laws of Louisiana. I am not asking for more, but I demand no less. Killing an unarmed man who is defending his wife is something for which I would gladly take the killer out into the wilderness and nail him to a tree. I would leave a razor blade for him to cut off the parts nailed to the tree, or he could cut his own throat. I probably would leave the guilty party without clothes and surrounded by as many thorny plants as I could possibly find. I wish I could do this, but in all reality, I wouldn't as it would make me no better than the murderer.

Life's not fair, but the law can change that.
A fair trial and a fair hanging sounds fair to me.

Sounds too much like Marion Carl, first WWII marine ace, 18.5 victories, retired as a two star general. Setting in his home which was invaded by a druggy that wasn't worth spit, armed with a shotgun, killed Gen Carl and shot his wife. This happened in 98. I hope there is a special "place" (out of respect for Hobie) for such scum.

Re: OT - Marine dies defending wife
While this is sad beyond words, these folks were not without some culpability for being utterly stupid. Walking in the French Quarter at 3:30AM, they were verbally accosted by the occupants of a car who made derogatory remarks about the woman. SHE went to the car and got physical with the occupants, and then he got into the fray while assisting her, and of course it escalated into knife play and he's dead.
Lemme just make a guess that everybody involved was somewhat impaired, and lemme further opine that had they ignored the rude remarks, everybody'd still be alive.
Tragic, yes, but very dumb.

piller, please allow me to disagree that your actions would bring you down to the murder's level. You would merely be meeting out just punishment to match his heinous crime...........nothing to be ashamed of. Now it may be true that it isn't your job, but the way our upsidedown criminal justice system has been lately, you'd be doing the society a much-needed service, pard, believe me! jd45

there is a simple legal principle in any altercation. if somebody starts at a low level of irritant, such as a verbal insult, they are wrong at that point, and the "insultee" is a victim. But if the other party raises the bar to a slap, shove, punch, bite, etc, the party who makes it physical is at that point the aggressor, and is in fact the attacker, and our orignal "aggresor" is now the victim. (you can meet force with force, but you cannot up the ante).
Further, if you were to reach into somebody's car and grab hold of em, and ya happen to be in a state with an "extended castle doctrine", they MIGHT be in the right to shoot you EVEN IF they initially swore at ya, etc. Being insulted does NOT give us carte blanche to kick some tail and claim "victim" status and impunity for physically punishing the insultor. (though we might like that).....
If it had stopped at the lady slapping the rude mouth, he woulda been guilty of harassment, and she of simple assault. Once her Marine husband grabbed the guy, a case MIGHT well be made the guy was in fear of his life and responded justifiably, even though his mouth started it.

So, , the best one could hope for to stay legal would be to give them back some interesting Verbal Abuse and hope they give you a legal chance to whup azz? That law does not bode well for Old or infirm people....I have NO intention of getting my azz whupped, and cannot whup on anybody at the present time. I'll have to take my chance with a brandishment of my piece and hope they go away. This graduated escalation could be the downfall of many a ailing victim.....adirondakjack wrote:Idahoser wrote:blaming the victim? True, and the folks typically winding up drafted for, and accepting, Jury Duty, will not have a good grasp of relative lethality of weapons. In other words, three punks with sharpened 12" screwdrivers they'll think are "just rowdy boys", and your .22 WMR revolver is < gasp > a g-g-g-GUN...!BlaineG wrote:This graduated escalation could be the downfall of many a ailing victim.....

Re: OT - Marine dies defending wife
Being from Louisiana and living just 20 min north of the hell hole known as New Orleans I know all to well the kind of scum that lives there. I read about this the day after it happened and it made me sick. He was even in his dress blues. For someone to take the life of someone for something so stupid to begin with is very low......to do that to a man in uniform who fights for you to be able to walk freely down the street is about as low as it gets. I hope they find the punk who done this. Its likely they never will and that he will just be known as another New Orleans statistic.

Re: OT - Marine dies defending wife
Another sad example of of how people in a supposedly civilized society view and treat other people. Insulting another man's wife. Assaulting a man in uniform. Sad.
In my mind, the man left a celebration blowing off steam with his comrades in arms, likely in an altered state of sobriety, to wander the streets of a dangerous city in early morning hours, unarmed, with a woman and no-one to back him up.
Perhaps the escalation was unavoidable because the occupants of the vehicle were looking for trouble. I can't say, I wasn't there.
I don't doubt that the occupant of the vehicle was a low-life or a scumbag, and I'm not blaming the victim, I'm just saying that there's a lesson here. A man needs to be atuned to his environment. In this day and age a man simply cannot afford to relax his guard and needs to take a care not to allow his state of mental readiness to be compromised. A guy has to be both ready and able to get out of a jam.
This could have happened to anyone. This poor bastid just happened to be a Marine.

There was a time in this country when insulting a man's wife or girlfriend would be guaranteed to start a fight, and no one would have blamed the person defending the woman's honor.

Died needlessly but as a real hero. Our thoughts are with his family. Sure glad you guys got the death penalty down there.
I vote to give the killer to his Marine unit and drive away.

Re: OT - Marine dies defending wife
that was when the government offset the tax on marriage with defense of marriage. You got something for your money. Now you get penalized with nothing in return but disdain.
If govt isn't going to prosecute crimes against marriage then it ought to get out of the licensing of it, which is also the best solution to the homo problem. No license, no benefit, no penalty, no govt involvement, just a personal and, if desired, religious contract. Spouse has no status in law at all, you assign your beneficiary to any person, animal or cartoon character you like, nobody's business where you put your [nevermind]

I can easily go purchase some plastic cable ties to restrain the murderer for the length of the car ride to deliver him to justice. I may joke with the Marines, but I RESPECT them, and I volunteer to take the murderer to them for justice. Heck, just so that the Marines wouldn't feel left out, I would even remove the cable ties before I pushed the murderer out of the car. Marines would never harm a man who was bound as it would be unethical, and I would be quite happy to help them avoid an ethical dilemna.

You really don't know much about Marines.
"Ethics".
If you delivered him tied up, they'd leave him that way and then spend hours p*ssing on him and feeding him to ants.
They might eventually show mercy and end it, but not until something with more entertainment value caught their attention.

I've been to that sewer hole of a city twice. Once in the Quarter and once passing through. I see no need to go there again. Filthy and dangerous.

Just one more reason not to ever visit that dump New Orleans ever again. I so wish that hurricane Katrinea had completely destroyed the place and washed, then mayor, Ray Nagin out of his "chocolate city" and well out to sea......

While I dont like a lot of the element there in the city.....there are some good people who live there and to wish those people's lives to be destroyed is a very good thing to wish.
