OT for all of you landlocked folk to drool over...

Post by pharmseller »

I took my wife and son crabbing off the Oregon coast last weekend.
Dungeness crab, ain't none better! The limit is 12 per person.

Image

Legal crab are male and must be at least 5 3/4" across the back. Sunday we caught 33 MONSTERS! Some went 7 1/2".

Image

I prefer to clean the crab before I cook, since I can fit more crab in the pot and the mess is WAY less. Here's Sunday's take at the cleaning station:

Image

We left the pots in the ocean to soak overnight and got two limits on the first pull:

Image

On Monday we matched the day before with another 33. The cleaning station the next day:

I plan on one or two more trips before the ocean season closes on October 15.

I would need eating lessons on those, but I'm game.

Good haul. Life's too complicated when you don't have time to fish.

Seeing as how central Oklahoma is quite a ways from the Pacific ocean, no apologies are necessary.
And by the way, sorry about my football team beating up on Oklahoma and Oklahoma State over the past few years.

We use cylindrical pots covered with wire that act as one-way traps. The crabs get in, and can't get out. Attach 75 feet of rope and two buoys. Add the bait of your choice (I prefer shad, the big kind), soak in the ocean for 1 or 2 hours and viola, crab dinner.

I've had plenty of fresh blue crab, but never a Dungeness. Looks mighty tasty!

I wouldn't know what to do with one of those sea spiders but I'd give it a try!

Now those beauts on the lawn? Egads!! Just thinking about their tenderloins is making me salivate. :)

And here I am in Central Illinois. All there is for me is the tastiest cornfed whitetail in the country. Funny how some leave Illinois and pay big money to hunt elk while people in Colorado come to Ill for whitetail. We are truely blessed in this great country.

Steam or boil.
Pick leg meat for sandwiches or by itself w/garlic butter and french bread.
Body meat for crab cakes!

I picked all the meat and ended up with 17 sandwich sized freezer bags full.
That's a lot of crab!
