OT - Gas Checks

Post by cnjarvis »

I just picked up a new mould for my 30-30. The mould casts a 170 gr. FP with a gas check base.

Can bullets designed for a gas check be shot without them and not lead the barrel?

Sure, they will work but..........make sure they are sized to at least groove diameter or a thou over. Keep the velocities about 1500 or below depending on alloy. A soft bullet might only be good for a thou. fps where a Lyman #2 bullet will be good for 1500 and a little above. Bore condition also plays a lot so if your bore is rough or pitted, better use the check. Most likely any deviation from the above will result in leading.-----------------Sixgun

Maybe yes and maybe no. Bullets with a gas check shank and fired without the check in place give spotty results even at plain base velocities.

Lllife will be much simplier, if you don't want to use gas checks, you will be far better off investing in a plain base mold and keeping the velocities to 1.5K fps or below. Plain base bullets do well in the 1.1 to 1.2 K fps range.
