I bought a handi-rifle

Post by Jason_W »

But I probably won't be able to fire it for a while. I don't shoot in these temps unless I really have to.

It seems to be a really well built rifle for the money. I'm going to send it away to get it fitted for a 30-30 barrel for my fiance to use next deer season.

What barrel is it wearing now?

I bought one with a 223 heavy barrel....and it shoots very well.

There is a large group of fellas over at Graybeard that love those rifles.

Good luck with yours!!! :D

Mine currently has a .223 barrel on it. I orginally wanted a .22 hornet, just to be different, but I figured .223 brass would probably be easier to find.

It's been like nine degree out lately.

The range report will have to wait for warmer temps.

I'm going to be helping to teach some cousins of mine how to shoot this February. Maybe I can test fire it then.

I don't want to start them on a centerfire, of course, but they might find a vaporizing bottle of soda cool to see.

It's encouraging that a couple of kids from Long Island want to learn how do things like shoot .22s and fish.

I bought this one in 223. Shot a nice buck with it this year. Love the simplicity of it not to mention the storage compartments in the buttstock and forearm. I dont even notice it when touching off a 223 round. I am planning on sending it in for a 12 gauge turkey barrel and a 30.06 barrel for sure. After that I might opt for a 357 barrel and a 45-70 barrel.
Oh, forgot to add I have a nice old El Paso steel tube Weaver 4X for it.

I love my Handi rifle. Mine is in .30-30. I'm thinking about one in .223 but since I've shot a bench rest target I'm thinking about trying one in .22 LR as well. the .22 LR uses a rimfire frame that won't interchange with the centerfires but they look like a hoot. Chase Mountain Custom makes one they call a sleeper that would be fun to shoot.
With their barrel program there are endless possibilities. Check out the web site and dream.

With blueDot you can easily load it to .22 Hornet levels and a little below. In practical terms, this is the best .22 barrel to get.

I'd recommend a .357 Mag barrel, too. A rifle that shoots "pistol" ammo might come in handy.

Hobie

I have an 1894 in .357, so that's going on low priority for now. I am trying to buy a house after all.

Heck, that handi could be the las gun I ever buy :(

Don't you believe it!

When I bought my first house I thought I'd never eat another square meal, would have only one pair of blue jeans and one shirt and would have to cut my personal hygiene to once a month AND never get another gun. None of that was true. Now, divorce is a different story! AND I was LUCKY!

Hobe's sooo right. Buying a new house sure makes you feel like you're in the poor house but it will get better.

I have a NEF Survivor 12Ga. I picked it up at a show just for fun and I was really supprised at how well made and fun it is.

I've had a number of them over the years. I currently have a 38-55 target model, wearing a 36" long scope. I also have my sons' 30-30/223's in the safe.

For other big bore fans, there's a good, but short article in American Hunter about a fellow using a 45-70 on a moose hunt. he was using black powder behind a 350gr A-Frame bullet, netting about 1600fps.

He ended up shooting a moose under a hundred years, and was SUPRISED to NOT find his bullet, since it was a complete pass through. Over 5' of penetration through muscle and bones.

Says he might have to "rethink" the Elmer Kieth theory of heavy slow bullets.

No suprise to us big bore fans.
