OT - Best Westerns II

Post by Gun Smith »

I didn't want to highjack the original thread. OK guys, let's put together our own lists of the best westerns ever filmed, a minimum of 10 up to 25. #1 is best. Let's all take a couple of days to compile them.

#1 - Lonesome Dove
#2 Quigley Down Under
#3 - McClintock
#4 - Rio Bravo
#5 - Tombstone
#6 - The Undefeated
#7 - Open Range
#8 True Grit
#9 - The Shootist
#10 - Whispering Smith

If I took more time to consider, I'd probably add more and maybe rearrange the one's I've already listed, but I'll stand by my opinion that these are among the best Western Movies ever.

The Long Riders
The Outlaw Josie Wales
Quigley Down Under (in spite of the overly melodramatic villain)
Tom Horn (someone mentioned authenticity on the other thread - this was it)
True Grit
The Cowboys
Winchester 73
High Noon
Hidalgo
3 Godfathers (cowboy Christmas)

squeaking out my last 8,
High Plains Drifter
The Shootist
Little Big Man
Dances with Wolves
Shane
The Gunfighter
I'll just leave the last few open for anything with Gregory Peck , Glenn Ford, or William Holden - I like them in westerns.

Here's my list. The first few are in order, but after that it's pretty much mix and match. If I took a lot of time to arrange this, I would have put a different order after Josey Wales. BTW, I'm a huge John Wayne fan if you can't tell.

Lonesome Dove
Tombstone
The Cowboys
The Outlaw Josey Wales
True Grit
El Dorado
Rio Lobo
Big Jake
Unforgiven
Open Range
Broken Trail
Pale Rider
Sons of Katie Elder
Quick and the Dead (the one with Sam Elliot, not Gene Hackman)
The Sacketts
Shadowriders
Monte Walsh
Quigley
Crossfire Trail
The Searchers
Comancheros
The Shootist
Jeremiah Johnson
The Undefeated

Not to hyjack but there are some very popular Westerns that I have zero interest in:

Unforgiven
How the West was Won

Appaloosa (plodding)
3:10 to Yuma (II) (too dark visually, too dumb rancher/pursuant, but hey, guess that's the story!)

I've copied down all the lists and put an asterisk beside the movies I have. I have most of those listed. Plus some that were not listed.

Here are some I've enjoyed that nobody else mentioned in no particular order:

Bandidas
Bite The Bullet
Missing
Bend In The River
Shenandoah
Broken Arrow
Cahill United States Marshal
Wyatt Earp

These may not be the most popular, but I enjoyed them and I didn't want to list those others had listed.

I agree, Rancho Deluxe is one of my favorites also, Lonely Are the Brave.

Regarding the spaghetti westerns, without them Clint might not have been a big star and a lot of American productions since then might never have been funded. They helped revive the public's interest in westerns.

I'll just ditto all the above. They ALL are on my list. Here's one I didn't see mentioned ... Dances With Wolves. I liked it at least.

Not exactly a western but, another great Gregory Peck film was The Yearling. Especially the real bear/hound fight.
