OT: Looks like the Iceland Volcano is no where near done....

No end in sight for volcano eruptions
-------------------

By PAISLEY DODDS and SYLVIA HUI, Associated Press Writers Paisley Dodds And Sylvia Hui, Associated Press Writers – 52 mins ago

LONDON – A lingering volcanic ash plume forced extended no-fly restrictions over much of Europe on Saturday, as scientists warned that activity at a volcano in Iceland had increased and showed no sign of abating — a portent of more travel chaos to come.

Scientists say that because the volcano is situated below a glacial ice cap, the magma is being cooled quickly, causing explosions and plumes of grit that can be catastrophic to plane engines if prevailing winds are right.

"The activity has been quite vigorous overnight, causing the eruption column to grow," Icelandic geologist Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson told The Associated Press on Saturday. "It's the magma mixing with the water that creates the explosivity. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an end in sight."

An expansive cloud of grit hovered over parts of western Europe on Saturday, triggering extended flight bans that stranded people around the globe. Forecasters said light prevailing winds in Europe — and large amounts of unmelted glacial ice above the volcano — mean that the situation is unlikely to change in the coming days. ///

So, I wonder - if this thing continues for years - what's the long term effect on the world economy? This has shut down air travel over much of europe and if it continues, it will keep it shut down...

Heck with the economy-------------------continues for years(were all cooked, ICE AGE and ONLY ASH
one report said the size of eruption could massively expand and could be indefinite.

Why not follow tradition. Send Al Gore over there. He can walk up to the eruption wave his arms at and make it go away. Of course a human sacrifice may be called for after the arm waving. Just an idea. Good Luck......

As a Geologist, I would tell you these things can go on for years or decades. Volcanoes are not well understood. The reason for the ash is the hot lava is interacting with the melted glacier which flashes the lava to tephra and blasts it high into the atmosphere. This is the junk that is killing the planes. No big deal once the water source goes away it won't flash as high and we should be good to go. Who knows when this will be though.

We (modern man) has gone a long time with no great eruptions. We are due. Time for a bit of geology in action.

Oh and I agree with the comment above. If this goes on for a few months or a year, the temp on the planet will plunge a bunch. Could be a cold summer!

I have a very fine layer of ash on my car, it looks like it's been dusted for finger prints!

Sure is quiet in the sky with no aircraft.

Thought the same thing my self.

If the other one goes off it could make for an interesting year. Don't think the world economy could take a hit like that.

Geez, Cliff - are ya trying to get us all KILLED?!?!

Al Gore as a human sacrifice? (First of all, your definition of
HUMAN is entirely too broad.......)

I mean really - if you were a god and someone sacrificed Al Gore to you
instead of a coupla gorgeous virgins, how would you feel?!?!? LIke maybe
someone is tryin' to be a wise guy?

Sheesh!

I recall when Mount Pinatumbo in the Philippines erupted in 1990's and we had a very snowy winter as the result. I suspect that we'll get a real gorilla this winter.

Not good enough. But I can guarantee that if you add in blama, reid, pelosi, boxer, dodd, the little pervert, and another couple hundred politicians that it will stop instantly.

Go ahead, trust me on this one... it's a small sacrifice really.
