Nope. I lasted about 2 weeks when I found a bunch of folks I went to HS with. After 2 weeks, I remembered why I only kept in contact with 2-3 of them over the past 20 years.

No condensending on the dudes who do but who has time for stupid stuff like Facebook? I don't even talk on the phone unless I have to. Very little TV except the Military History channel.
This is my life:
Go to work Mon-Fri (6-2:30--40 hours--no more! )
Come home 2:35 PM, play with dogs and do anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours of chores
Take shower, eat
Play with guns and load ammo
Get online to check e-mail & Leverguns
Gather my dogs & go to bed
weekends---Gunshows, gunclub, Hangout at Targetmaster, travel to competitive shoots, load ammo, hunt a little, maintain 3 Jeeps, play with dogs.
Once in a while I talk to my wife. --------------Yea, nothin' like being one way but a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do.

Some, and I found an old friend who I was happy to talk to again. He was one of the few people I hung out with in High School. Through another friend on there, I also met a lady who was at all the same Army Posts that I was, and at the same times. We never met, but she was a parachute rigger, so she might have kept me alive as it is possible that I jumped with a chute she rigged. We'll never know, but she seems like a nice lady. If you are careful with Facebook, it can be a good way to find old friends, especially if you are like me and have moved a few times.

I am and I tell ya what, it helps me stay in touch with folks who are NOT using the old fashioned techology like TELEPHONES. FB has also allowed me to reunite with long lost folks I do care about, while not making me ADD those I don't as friends, etc.
Two twenty-something relatives are on FB, one serving in the sandbox, the other living 1500 miles away, and it's nice to have them pop in and say hi when I check the pages, etc.
Now I don't go in for the time-wasting games and stuff, but it has it's uses, at least for me.

Haven't really had much contact with "friends" from the past that I didn't already keep up with on occasion anyways.

Re: OT --- Facebook ?
I may be more of a Luddite than I had thought. I tried facebook, for about a half hour. I guess I just dont "get it". I also didnt want to give them the password to my e-mail account to see if anyone in there had a facebook account. I think they send out an invite to anyone in there, as I've gotten a few invites from people joining, and I asked them, they didnt know it was going to happen. I don't want to be facebook friends with many people in my e-mail address book, or for them to know any more about me. I also really don't care to put my name out online, so I guess it isnt likely to go anywhere for me. I tried myspace for a short while, I really didnt "get it" either.
I figure I already waste enough time on this and a couple other places I go online.
I don't have a TV either,....

Re: OT --- Facebook ?
You don't have to give them the password to your email account. All you do is paste in someones email address in the search block , if that person doesn't come up already there, then you can send them the email to come join in,if you want to.
It takes less time to see what's posted by your "friends" on facebook than it does to skip past the political and ot topics on the active topics page here.

Re: OT --- Facebook ?
I believe that's how most cookies function, including the ones on leverguns. What they do with the info is another question. You can manually delete cookies when you leave a site. If you don't delete cookies, then wherever you go and have cookies enabled, will know where you've been. If you want to know how many cookies you collect, go into your internet settings and set it to manually accept or deny all cookies. In manual, you can see that many sites will try to set at least 3 or 4 cookies, some up to a dozen. You'll get third party cookies also, seemingly completely unrelated to the site youre visiting. You have to have cookies enabled in most sites to log in and post. Other browsers may function differently, but I think this is pretty basic.Grizz wrote:just to throw a wet dishtowel in, unless something has changed recently, facebook installs a cookie deal that follows your around the internet, EVEN WHEN YOU'RE NOT LOGGED INTO YOUR ACCOUNT. Do you log in automatically here or anywhere else? That's cookies that enable that.
I have only a few sites set to allow cookies, all others are shut off, and all third party cookies always shut off.

That makes sense Don. Thanks for the clarification.
I guess I may just lack the level of interest it takes to make that medium effective.

If it wasn't for all the pictures and daily stuff the kids put on there about the grandkids, nieces and nephews etc, there wouldn't be much point in it. All the stuff from the other "friends" we usually get in emails, messenger or phone calls etc.

Malamute,
not the same thing. the cookies on this site keep track of what posts we've read. as near as I can tell, those cookies do not track any other use of the web from my computer, and the site owners do not use my interaction with this site commercially. The owners of this site don't track what I do on other sites, or track at all if I'm not using this site.
OTOH, the social networking sites, including I believe facebook and some others, actually track what you do on this site, and every other site you visit, regardless of whether you are logged into the facebook site.
THAT'S A HORSE OF AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT COLOR. There's no comparison. The social networking sites essentially hijack your internet usage patterns.
I hope I made the distinction clear. The social network sites are data mining everything you do with your browser.

What I'm trying to communicate is not about cookies. It is about a trojan that tracks all of your browser usage and reports that back to their database. It is a script that lurks and runs when you open your browser. It isn't "a cookie", as I understand it.
Sorry if I'm not typing clearly.

Re: OT --- Facebook ?
Asked son Bob (he gets his paycheck for being the internet security specialist) about this trojan etc stuff.
He read the thread and this is what he wrote back.
Looking at the whole thread:
"facebook installs a cookie deal that follows your around the internet, EVEN WHEN YOU'RE NOT LOGGED INTO YOUR ACCOUNT. Then they slice and dice the data and sell it commercially."
True. Thing is, though, that everyone does this. Secrecy about which websites you visit died in the 90's. CNN, FoxNews, Amazon, etc, etc, etc - they're all using cookies to track where else online you're going, and have been for years. Facebook isn't doing anything any more or less evil than the rest of the net here.
"I also didnt want to give them the password to my e-mail account to see if anyone in there had a facebook account."
This is wise. Never do this. Use different passwords for everything, but especially do not use the same password for Facebook as you do your email. And never tell Facebook or any other site your passwords, because before too long they'll get used without your permission.
"I believe that's how most cookies function, including the ones on leverguns."
Yep.
"the cookies on this site keep track of what posts we've read. as near as I can tell, those cookies do not track any other use of the web from my computer, and the site owners do not use my interaction with this site commercially. The owners of this site don't track what I do on other sites, or track at all if I'm not using this site."
First, even if this were true, it could change overnight without your knowledge or consent. Second, as above, you really need to assume that this is happening anyway. You should be using security practices that make it 'no big deal' if someone knows your internet history. Think big glass windows without curtains...
"The social network sites are data mining everything you do with your browser."
This is fear-mongering, due to not finding value in that category of website. Again, assume 'not safe' everywhere.
"It is about a trojan that tracks all of your browser usage and reports that back to their database"
Nope. The only 'trojan' is your webbrowser. Think about it - it writes cookies, and needs to read them back later. What's stopping it from reading all the other files in that folder as well? Nothing, that's what.
This presentation takes a while to watch, but you'd be shocked by what's available about you even if you delete every cookie ever created as soon as they appear:

Here's the difference. I don't have to permit cookie use, and don't, on any of those sites cited above. My default is no cookies allowed. I can use this site without cookies. I can use CNN, Fox, Amazon, etc, etc, etc- with cookies disabled.True.
But you can't use the social sites without cookies enabled, they force you to have them on to use the site. This is the point I am trying to make. There are also "supercookies" THAT DON'T SHOW UP in the cookie management window, or I misread the article about that detail. Search supercookies if interested.
It's true, browsers report your operating system and version, your browser version, and your ISP's IP. I would defeat that too if I knew how. The only way I know is to use anonymizer servers, and I DON'T TRUST THEM ANY MORE THAN I TRUST THE SOCIAL SITES, OR hussein FOR THAT MATTER.
Regards,
Grizz

there is no Facebook trojan. That's a web rumor. facebook, like MANY sites, uses advanced cookies and little scripts that read your IP address and targeted adevertizing appears when you use the site. Just like some sites use "reader" software that actually searches your posts for keyowrds and shazaam, "pertinent" banners appear on the page. Discuss abortion on a motorcycle website, suddenly ya have right to life or birth control ads on the bottom of the page.
Be that as it may, like walking in a field, yer boots get dirty. Norton and/or adaware on a frequent basis is the "boot brush"....
it's a FACT of life online.
They just had a piece on major network TV saying the FEDS are doing exactly the same thing, as are state and local LEOs. They scan facebook or (shudder) gun websites looking for email addresses or screen names known to be associated with certain folks. They track who they chat with, their facebook buddies, etc. Good way to build intel on gangbangers or skinheads in the "twitter" age....

FACEBOOK, ACCORDING TO THEIR USER AGREEMENT, TRACKS YOUR BROWSER USAGE EVEN WHEN YOU ARE NOT LOGGED IN TO YOUR FACEBOOK ACCOUNT.
I READ THIS IN THE USER AGREEMENT.
WHAT'S THE POINT OF DENYING THEIR USEAGE POLICY?

I'll be sure and keep all my paper money and bank statements under 1 inch thick sheets of lead so those black helicopters can tell how much money I have when they fly over as well.

I have an account, but probably only look at it once a week or so. Really just a means to see some photos of extended family.

I still like the dial type phones. Much easier to use, better to hear on, and NO weird noises . Besides , I don't give a rat's ****** about most of the past , and little of the
present. .... The people I'm speaking of.

Re: OT --- Facebook ?
thats roughly my extent of usage also. Couple of long lost family members have re-connected with me through there, that type of thing. Started the account because a ton of people would say things like "your not on myspace or facebook? weird" -- So i started an account and posted a couple of pics, etc. Kept up with it for about 2 weeks, but now i dont log in unless i get a friend request or something. Trouble is, i do half my work for my job on the computer (4 or 5 hours a day) -- and often times, when the job is done --- i have to back away from the thing and do something else not computer related at allYsabel Kid wrote:I have an account, but probably only look at it once a week or so. This site, AR15.com and 67-72chevytrucks.com get most of my recreational computer time. I dont have enough time in the day for FB, but i do think its a neat concept
