Medieval feast In preparation -now eaten!

Post by crs »

As a result of his school studies, my grandson, Troupe, has decided to prepare a medieval feast tonight using only food of the types available way back then. Fortunately beer, wine, cheese, and crackers were available, so the appetizers are great!
He has his mom and grandmom as supporting cooks and they are busily preparing game fowl(pheasant, chukar, quail) , wild rice, new potatoes, home made bread, and more. This appears to be a dinner for 10- 15,so had I known, I would have invited 86er, Ricky, and a few other families over to help eat it all.
The kitchen scene is a bit frantic, so I escaped back to my office to hide out until either the food is ready or I am summoned to go grill something.

More to come as the experience evolves! :)

now in a true Medieval meal, the only eating utensil was a sharp knife and sometimes a wooden spoon.

SJ, do not forget fingers!
Actually, several compromises may be made, but it promises to be fun!
For the chukars and the pheasant, they will be using the motorized rotisserie for the first time! And it is a propane cooker.
Oops, I have just been summoned to fetch an extension cord from the shop!

Sounds like fun, though...! 8)

I always like eating my soup out of a bread bowl - then eating the bread. Not sure how truly "medieval" it is, but it tastes good! :D

I can't believe I ate the whole thing! :)

Well, at least three quail, a chukar leg, a half a pheasant breast + three Shiner Bocks, new potatoes, mushroom soup, and the quail was served on homemade wheat bread toast covered with the mushroom and rice gravy in which it was baked!

We even had our mastiff (Italian, not english) to feed table scraps.

All great fun and a good way to start working down the store of frozen gamebirds before the next outing in February.

Kid, we are kindred spirits! That is the best bowl of soup (or chili as I do) that can be had!

Who needs a garbage disposal when there is a Neapolitan Mastiff in the house?

Sounds like a grand feast!

Even if y'all didn't use a dog-powereed roasting spit.

Dog. What is wrong with using a small boy as the meat turner? If you want to be authentic go all the way. Also I hope no one used a fork to eat with. That is a tool used by the Devil.

Sounds like a good time!

If I recall, the Medevial period (Middle Ages) was about the 5th through the 15th centuries.

Potoatos didn't exist anywhere except South America until the end of the 16th century, when the Spaniards started hauling them back to Europe about 1570.

The point of my thought is that it's funny how we think of things that are common today as always having been available.

:)

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

I would have brought a flagon of Ballantyne Ale--since I don't think anybody sells mead these days! How about providing more detail--including some recipes that your guests liked? :)

FW - correct on the potatoes and we even discussed that - BUT the alternative was turnips and they are my least favorite veggie + Troupe loves potatoes.
Doc - we discussed non-automated rotisserie, but it was cold and damp outside, so we made another compromise! :D
Also, the Shiner Bock is not too different from some Olde English brews such as Bishops Finger, Newcastle Brown Ale (aka Nooki Brown in the London pubs), or Fuller's Brown Ale. In a clear mug, it is eay to imagine they are the same.

After the Leverguns hog hunt this weekend, we plan to use the newly operable rotisserie on a ham or two. YUMM!

You didn't eat the fowl with your fingers did you? In the Middle Ages, the fingers were always eaten separately :D
