Well I got back from my annual pig hunt last night. We didnt get any not for lack of trying but they were all moving at night and playing hard to get. For those of you that hav never been to Vandengerg the place is crazy. Every time we go up there we see more deeer then you can shake a stick at. Yesterday alone we saw 10 deer 4 bucks and 6 does Saturday we saw 5 deer in the first 5 min of our hunt 4 bucks 1 doe two of the smaller bucks had a little sparring match for our enjoyment . The country up there is beautiful big oaks every were with large grass covered valleys. Well any way on with the pic's.

Not levers but I like em any way. This is my No4Mk1 Savage made enfield in her hunting cloths. I didnt feel like banging up that nice wood. I got this gun as my 16th B-day present from my dad my first centerfire I have carried her on many hunts and will on many more. The other gun is my 7 1/2" Vaquero in 45colt of course I always take it along on pig hunts as a just in case.

Yeah we had fun . The pic of me was taken Saturday night right after sun down we had covered around 15 miles that day glassing valleys and pasture areas. Its alot of work but it beats being at work .
The smokes were all I had in my pocket for refrence beside my Marine Corps Zippo and no way I was putting that on the ground .

JReed, nice pics!!!! I think its neat that you hunt with such a cool old rifle, given to you by your Dad! I didn't know they made synthetic stocks for the SMLE's, but it seems appropriate for your Dad's rifle. I'm very glad you had a nice time, and it does remind me of home somewhat (as per our conversation). Perhaps someday we can hunt together up here slightly north of your posistion. If we do Hunter-Liggett, we will have to use lead-free bullets now. Other zones up my way are shotgun only. So it is somewhat problematic up here.
The weather was great Sat was high in the mid 60's lows around 40 Sun was a high of low 70's with the low in the morning around 45 . Cant beat that with a stick.

Man, there is so much great hunting land in that state. It just makes me sick when I think about the road down which it is headed relative to the RKBA and hunting.
Tutt the stock is by ATI they make synthetic stocks for a few of the different mil surplus rifles. Yeah we will have to try to get together and hunt some time I will have to see were the Corps takes me this summer it may have to wait a year or 2. I may have to get you on to Vandenberg as a guest during deer season.

AWESOME "smelly" in either dress, something to hand down to the little guy one day. Thanks for sharing the great pictures, they tell a thousand words as they say.
All this pig hunting talk reminds me a promise I made last month to an old friend to come shoot pigs with him.
I guess I will have to take him up on his request that I come over to his place SE of Dallas and help eradicate some of his feral hogs. He has so many that he has been having to shoot them from his back porch and just let the coyotes and buzzards clean up. Least that is what he says.

Years ago, I hunted up at Fort Hunter Liggett (sp). Had lots of rules. Incuding getting in at dawn and out by dusk, and no hand guns. Any such restrictions at Vandenberg? Civilians allowed? Reason I ask about civilians is that, gosh, over thirty years ago at Eglin AFB, military could hunt but not (legally) civilians.

Civilians can hunt Vandenberg if they have an active duty sponser. As far as what weapons you can use they dont much care as long as it is leagal in the state. Hunter Liggett as of 2 years ago was allowing handguns over 4".
New Pig Hunter yeah my buddy wants to go back up there in a month or to but I have a ton of stuff going on and wont be able to swing it.

That rifle was given to me by my dad he bought it at a gun store he used to work at in Orange County (Ca that is). It was in what I now belive unfired condition. It took me 2 weeks every day after school to get all the cosmoline out of her and put back together. With plain base bullets she is a tack driver with the 2 grove bbl she doesnt much like boat tails. I call her Bertha as she weighs 9 1/4lbs unloaded with the wood stocks in place she is the only gun I have ever named.

Some of the country was real levergun brush busting. But since there were so many wide open spots I chose the old battel axe. As to getting a pig it is more about the journey then the destination so it was a great hunt

Very nice, one of the things I miss about Calif. I never got to hunt VAFB but did get to hunt Pendleton several times. Looks like you did have a good time.

Nice pics and from the way you talk I assume you are still on active duty. I did have a lighter once and it did hit the ground and have seen it in years. But as an Army type it isn't to hard to figure out how it got lost.
I want to thank you for standing up for all Americans even those like me(DAV) as we can't do it now. If I was in better shape and younger I would enlist and do my turn in the sand box.
