I was looking at the new offerings of Legacy Sports International in the 92 Pumas and they are showing a couple interesting new series. They show scout model and an XP model designed for Hornady's new Leverevolution in 357 and 44 mag. But ...get this.... they both also come in the 17 Remington. How is this possible? I thought the 17 Rem was too long for the 92. I sure hope it is true and not a typo.

Hi ken,
Isn't the .17 Remington essentially a .223 case necked down to .17 caliber?
.223 maximum case length 1.76", that's about max OAL for a 92. Without a rim and too long, too. I'll believe it when I see it.
I too will believe it when I see it. I wonder if they meant 17hrm ? That would mean a rimfire 92 then.

I didn't check the case specs yet but could they possibly be talking about
the .17 Rem Fireball? It is shorter than the .223 case, plus I think the .17 remington
was made from the .222 mag? Or was that the .204?
Now I went and gave myself a headache
I would think the .17 rem would be the .223 with the shoulder bumped back
so you couldn't chamber a .223 but my curiosity is piqued so I'm off to do
some research.

Pay attention to YOUR Bill of Rights, in this day and age it is all we have.
OK did some research and the .17 machIV case is 1.400 and the .454 casull
is 1.385 so were talking 15 thousands of an inch here.
Rossi has the .454 so it may be plausible to have a .17 rem fireball.
Oyeah I forgot to say that the fireball is the mach IV legitimized and same
case length as the .221 rem fireball.
But now the question begs, "who has the guts to pull the trigger with more than
one cartridge in the magazine?". If they make a leverevolution wont the whole
projectile be made of red rubber?

Good point.
Good for them for being innovative, though. A 218 bee or Hornet would be kinda nice too.

Don't hold your breath on that one either. The guides can't be move togather close enough to control the extended 32H&R case. The lower part of the bolt/ejector won't pass through. Even the 32-20 and 25-20 Wins had to have the bolts clearanced to work.
As for this 17 Rem. goes I don't think it's going to work too well with out a rim. This reminds me of the old Win 92's that were converted to 45acp. they didn't work worth a hoot because of not rims. Too easy to just throw out live rounds when working the action.

I've never owned a 92 or others of its ilk, so it's not obvious to me that a rim is essential for feeding. My first reaction is it should be possible to shape the 92's cartridge guide so that it functions like the guide on a 95 Win (but I've not played with one of those either). This assumes the carrier presses the case snugly against the guides, as in a 95's magazine.
As for primers, would the .17 Fireball recoil enough to make this a concern? Which perhaps exposes another bit of my ignorance: does the 92 feed a case gently onto the carrier?

The problem with rimless in a 92 is the dim helps lift the rear of the cart. when feeding. The 92 is a really short action and it needs that lift to help the cart. make the turn. A bottle neck like the 17 rem may do it but I still think it will tend to throw out live rounds if operated really fast.
Thanks Steve, I think I can see that. I've read of troubles in some bolt rifles in getting the short mags to feed, and the proportions are about the same.
I looked up this morning the OAL of the .454 (already available in the Puma) and the .221 Fireball. Since the .22 version is already shorter than the .454, I conclude the new .17 Fireball will be shorter than the Cassull.
