Every once in a while someone posts a cool picture, which I then use as the wallpaper on my desktop. Yours just made it onto my desktop, thanks! BTW my co-workers think I'm nuts!

That building looks a little drafty. Surely that's more of a smokehouse than a dwelling. Those hounds don't look any too fat either.!

Re: Old Pic Hunter/Trappers.
That cabin looks just fine for what those fellows probably have in mind. It doesn't look like they're out for comfort but for a definite purpose. It's cool to see that they use donkeys/burros for their mounts. They are much more sure-footed in steep, rocky, uneven, narrowed-trail, terrain. There are gents that use them over on the CA/NV border for carring their gear and themselves. Last I heard, they use donkeys or mules to transport tourists from top to bottom and back in the Grand Canyon.

Different world, those dogs look like running dogs to me!
That cabin would be just great on a horrid cold wet night all the same with added bonus of no bickering woman around

Very interesting photo. My grandfather was a trapper from Marlin, Texas.

Are they hunters?
I see cattle in the background. Maybe they're line-men.

Looks more like another mule to me (he said squinting).

Great pic, I"ve saved this one for sure. Looks like some of Ben Lilly's contemporaries.
I could imagine that these old boys have been out chasing a stock killing lion or bear.

What a crew... You got your big guy on the left with a matching size burro... A little guy with matching size burro on the right... and a Leprechaun (prolly the guide) between them.. They got pelts on the door too!

Manhunters? They appear appropriately armed and seasoned for a job of that nature. Looks like the "old leprechuan" is packing a double gun and sure could be the guide for that country. That may be his mule in the background. Pelts look a little randomly opportunistic to me and possibly incidental to those gents' intentions.

Ben Lilly, now that was quite the fellow. He sure was tough on the bear populations .Warhawk wrote:Great pic, I"ve saved this one for sure. Looks like some of Ben Lilly's contemporaries.

Looks like they were somewhere kinda close to "civilization" where they could get sawn lumber for their tract house...
That burro on the left don't fit his 'britchen' too good. That could cause problems. Oh, well... it ain't that far to the ground...

The tree looks like a mesquite to me, I see a bobcat a coon and two Greyfox hanging, all three climb tree's so I bet the dogs have a little treeing ability, would bet a plug nickel the fellow on the ground is mostly Mexican and the dogs and fur are his, the other two guys look out of place to me, would guess they are in Texas, New Mexico or AZ.

The big one on the left with the carbine is packing a sixgun too.

Re: Old Pic Hunter/Trappers.
Yeah I noted that too, JerryB. That's one reason why I postulated in my earlier post that those fellers might be more'n just trappers. The two standing have a hard, determined look, more like folks on a "hunt"of some kind other than 4 legged varmints. I would guess the occasional posse might have a photographer along to record a capture when/if it occurred.JerryB wrote:The big one on the left with the carbine is packing a sixgun too.
That feller on the right brings to mind the look of Viggo Mortensen's character in "Apaloosa", minus the eight gauge of course. Just sayin'.
