1955 Marlin 39a Range Report - RAIN DELAY OVER

Post by Pete44ru »

I was all set to take my new-to-me 1955 Marlin 39a to my club fer-ta-try different ammo, ta see what she likes - but it's still drizzling from last night !

If it clears up this PM, I'm raring to go !

You'll have to tell us about that scope... 8)

Looks like a time machine to me, ready to take one back to the happiness of childhood. Very nice Pete!

The rain let up, and I was able to test several types/brands of RF ammo at 50yds, as below:

Image

No single type (LR/Short/Std Vel/etc) stood out as more accurate than any other, IMHO.

I can't say that I'm ecstatic, about the results - about what I can usually do with a peep sight.

Soooo, I'm gonna sell the vintage scope setup, and install either a receiver or tang peep sight.

BTW - The scope's a ca. 1950's Weaver J2.5x with a Litschert 8x Spot Shot power booster accessory installed up front.
The scope has at least 4" eye relief, since that model was the predecessor of the Weaver K-series for CF rifles.

There's some pics of the scope in our classifieds section.

Pete,
Neat looking rifle! Just a suggestion.....you may wish you had that neat, vintage scope back after your eyes have more years on them.............
You could remove the scope and use a peep / tang sight and switch back and forth if you so desire.

I do that with my 39A (1949 vintage) which wears either a 4X 1947 series Weaver scope (in pic) or an 8X Weaver with dual cross hairs circa late 50's. :D

Mine's a '57 vintage. I never had a .22 that I 've shot better.

Pete...that is one fine ol' 39. mine looks just the same, being a 50' model. Mine shoots like a house-a-fire. I bet yours will be too! Love the big forearm...it was designed like a target forearm. Mine doesn't look as good as yours...congrats on a terrific find. Now, go shoot something!

The answer of course is to keep that rifle and scope combo and then buy another for the peep.  You have a nice rifle there!! I love my 39A, a '63 model and a '57 Mountie.

Don't get too hung up on group size..... A much better test is just start shooting it and if it's "easy to hit with", what more could you ask for?

I have a 1955 Marlin 39 just like that. Sorta interesting story how it came to me. My Uncle what was District Judge in Texas was walking through the Sheriff's office when the Sheriff stoped him and said he had a problem and he didn't know what to do about it. They painted the Sheriff's office and when they moved some filing cabinets they found this rifle. It has been used in a double murder. The Sheriff said the records showed it had been destroyed some years before, but there it was and he was stumped about what to do. My uncle just picked up up and told the Sheriff he would take care of the problem and walked out the door. He solved the problem by giving it to me. That was twenty five years ago.

Great rifles, I installed an old all steel Redfield receiver sight on it. Shoots as good as I can see.

That's exactly why I might as well sell the scope and peep it.

  - maybe if I get around to fixing the 'cookies' problem or whatever I can stay logged-in long enough to keep my posts straight...

(...one reason not to fix them is that I won't have any excuse for messing up, then...)
