Please explain......I have no military background. What's wrong other than the person with the hands in pockets?

Respectfully...

Pockets serve no purpose on military uniform pants. You dont use them or your not supposed to anyways. If your hands are cold, put gloves on, that is if its winter time. The military likes uniformity, everyone looking the same. For an official photo, the position is attention, which means hands in a fist hanging straight down, palms inward, thumbs along your seam line. It looks very sloppy to have your hands in your pants, and thats a senior officer. They are supposed to set the example. Hope this helps explain somewhat.

Also, one would hope that uniforms would be, well, you know, uniform...

Yep, Chief - couldn't have been said better. She obviously didn't have the same kind of DI that I had.

I don't refer to them as "the Air Farce" outta spite! I wouldn't mind that PH so much if they'd have come along at the appropiate time and done their job. But, "the ceiling's too low" was an unacceptable excuse to this squid!

They've aquitted themselves well in the recent past, but my scar still itches... ok, maybe I do! :P

Dang, whatever happened to "the uniform of the day"???

Is it just me, or does the old woodland camo pattern seem to work a lot better than the new digital fleck stuff, based on that photo???

scott

p.s. There are actually 5 different uniforms in the photo.

In the Army, we always referred to hands in the pockets as wearing "Air Force Gloves"

Thats funny because in the Corp we call hands in the pocket Army gloves.

Yeah that is about what I expect from the AF also the one 2nd from the left in the front doesn't even have his heels together.

Well fellas, back in '78 on the first day of flight school (Army flt school) we had numerous formations in several different unifoms. We did not have time in between these "changes" to fully replace one uni with another and after about 4 such "changes" our formation looked an awfully lot like that one(sans hands in pockets, of course). It is hilarious even today when I think back to those VERY intense 30 mins, which of course lead into 9 months of VERY intense...lol!!

There have probably been a gagillion push ups done in basic training for recruits with their hands in their pockets or their heads uncovered outside. Very frowned upon in garrison and mostly in the field. When your downrange and it is 20 below though, rules can be bent a bit. Overall, it's frowned upon and thought of as a habit of "dirty nasty civilians".

Yes, we all bleed red for the red, white, and blue. That's why I never seriously gave much consideration to interservice rivalries, except for minimal humor value.

That said, there are undeniable differences between the branches. That is especially true of the Air Force since, by and large, the officers are the fighters and man the tip of the spear.

I remember a story from an Air Force vet from Vietnam. He was at one of the big bases during the Tet Offensive. He said they basically didn't know whether to sh*t or go blind when they were attacked on the ground and just hunkered down.

While sitting in their cobweb-filled bunkers that night amid the fireworks, a Marine infantry company arrived on the scene. He said this Marine lieutenant poked his head in their bunker and asked "Where are they?!?!?" They pointed and off the Jarheads ran.

He said that never before had he realized how different they were and how foreign the concept of running toward that danger was to him and his fellow airmen. It wasn't too long before everything was pretty much secure. He said that ever since then he's had a special love for the Marines.

They're all good men who do important work, it's the job that shapes them into different animals.

RSY, well said sir. I am undecided if Fire Fighters are extemely brave, or just fools; for what sane person will run into a burning inferno?

As a firefighter I can say the line between bravery and foolishness is extremely fine. In my case "it" just won't happen to me....
