357 Carbine Deer hunters...

Post by BigBoreWhore »

What bullet do you guys use and why?

Looking into the remington 158sp and 180hp
along with 180xtp's and partitions...

Keep in mind that we harvest a pile of 200lb+ bucks up here in Maine every year...

I have been thinking using one of the Rem/Hornady 180's for practice/small deer and the Partitions for big woods hunting...

I want to try my hand with the 1894c this year, Might feel a little nekid without the 45-70's or 30-30's but, I kind of like a challenge.

This is the only deer I've taken with my 357 in 1894C, about a 40 yard shot, quartering away:

180gr. XTP. Bullet went into ribs on one side out out the neck on the opposite side and kept going, no recovery.

This buck was dead when the hammer fell, although I had to track him a bit.

I have no experience with deer on the order of 200lbs, but I expect the results would be similar.

Hard to beat a heavy Cast Bullet going as fast as you can push it... especially when you need penetration as much (or more) than you need expansion.

I shoot the "Junior Load" of an air-cooled WW 180gr GC cast bullet over 16gr LilGun. Runs at 1800fps.

That's the equivelent of the Buffalo Bore round.

IMO if you can get a commercial 180 bullet to go that fast, penetrate AND expand, then you're doing great.

I use factory 158jsp - this Red hind was shot through spine so no recovery. I have complete faith after seeing damage. I allowed for drop that I shouldn't have worried about!

207 grain hard cast.
I used it because it was the heaviest I could get better than 1500 fps from accurately.
Kind regards,
Tycer

180 gr. cast with wheelweights, propelled by 16.0 gr. LilGun. Only killed one deer with this combo so far, but he piled up where he was standing.

First or second post here so here goes,,,, For deer and hogs when I have the chance to use it I prefer the Bearthooth 200 grain cast, loaded a little warm in my Rossi-92 carbine,

Have used the 145 grain silver tips on the smaller deer here in VA. but not often and kept the shots to under 75 meters.

A few I have seen taken with factory have been mostly Cor-Bon and Buffalo Bore stuff, worked very well

I think I am going to think about getting a .357 Mag carbine. These reports are impressive. Guess I will have to start shopping and employ the credit card!! Art

Might as well jump on board with the rest of us.

A lot of folks still under estimate how potent a 357 levergun is. A 180 gr. bullet at 1800+ fps ain't far behind other "proven" deer killers like the 30-30 and 35 Rem.

You've got that right, TedH!

There's probably more energy in the load you described than
in the original loading for the 30-30. And the 357 makes a
bigger hole. Nothin' wrong with that load for whitetail or
even black bear at shorter ranges.
