fun today....
3 months ago went to a gun auction and picked up a winchester 94 in 32-40. the gun is in very nice shape for a 1911. first the local hunt for brass, well the best i could come up with is john wayne loaded ammo. i don't care for nickel brass nor paying for loaded ammo. well ended up paying the long dollar on gunbroker for new winchester brass. now i see it's suppose to be available this fall in a seasonal run. next to find a load. found an accurate powder load of 24.3 gr of 2230 that i just happened to have. i rolled it back to 24 even, a start load with a hornady 170 gr flat point jacketed bullet. velosity should have been close to 1700 fps.
went to a gravel pit this morning and picked out a 10" rock at 60-70 yds. fired off 5 rounds and either hit the rock or right around it. good for me with open sights as need caterac surgery yet on the right eye.
i guess part of the biggest pleasure is loading up for an obsolete caliber and then touching it off in an 98 year old gun and wondering when was the last time it was fired. and was it for fun or food?

Oh man! These are my kind of posts! Love those old leverguns in obsolete calibers.
As for brass, I just run a 30-30 case through a 32-40 FLS. They come up a tad short but I just seat the bullets to the proper OAL and use a 30-30 Lee factory crimp die. Also use cast exclusively--lots cheaper for more shooting.

Dang thats nice. Put a warning up next time. I would be happy with a half worn out 94 in 32-40.

+1. A very, very nice rifle. You be a lucky man. I don't normally care for short magazines, but that's a dandy.morgan in nm wrote:Dang thats nice. Put a warning up next time. I would be happy with a half worn out 94 in 32-40.

When you said it was in very nice shape for a 1911, I thought you meant not too much rust!
That Winchester is in fantastic shape! Congratulations

Re: fun today....
thanks for all the complements. i haven't had the gun analized by my local winchester autority yet but it has a few things i wonder about. the wood seems better than standard grade. it has this little carbine style rear sight with two leafs and a roll up sight. kinda like a carbine express sight. the checkering is non factory and has a couple small run pasts on the layout lines. the barrel is 22". not sure if the receiver has worn by hand or flaked off but mostly silver with residual blue in the usual spots. i beleive it's all original finish on the wood yet. i think there was enough light to bring out the nice wood in the pictures. it doesn't jump out like that in the house. i have done nothing to the gun but clean & oil it.
to me it looks like a gun that may have been used a fair amount but always taken care of. if it was hunted with, great care was taken.
the weird thing about that day at the auction was that not many people were bidding on this gun. maybe 3 of us. i sat there dumbfounded. maybe because of the caliber? needless to say i was pretty happy when the gavel went down and she was going home with me. just wish she could talk, would love to hear the stories of where she's been......
