Single shot .45 Colt options?

I'd like a single shot .45 Colt rifle BUT a Lo-Wall is out of my budget. I've run through the various options I know of but it appears H&R/NEF have discontinued the .45 Colt barrels and so far I haven't found a Contender carbine barrel, only .45/.410 pistol barrels. I don't think the Martini Cadet action will handle the conversion.

I have a .45-70 Buffalo Classic, does anyone make a chamber adaptor for the shorter round?

Any other options/ideas/suggestions?

No chamber adapters for .45colt to 45-70 grove diameter for .45colt is .452 where it is .458 for 45-70.

But, if you already have a Contender frame, I would order a custom barrel through the T/C Custom Shop. (Actually, I once did - a 14" .375 Win w/muzzle tamer)

I might suggest using hollow based swaged .45 colt bullets like Winchester makes in a 45-70 case. They will expand up to fit the rifle with the right load. This is one reason a lot of the older cartridges used hollow based bullets. The manufacturer of firearms were all over the place on barrel diameters back when. Good Luck.....

Pete, right now $350-400 (in actuality $400-450 after shipping and xfer fees) isn't feasible so I was really hoping for just a barrel. Of course that makes me happy to see the EABCO link since I'd somehow overlooked them. The 16 week wait is a bit of a damper though. Doesn't mean I won't think long and hard about it...

Cliff, sure I can load the .45-70 down but it's still not a .45 Colt.

You might want to reconsider that Low Wall. I just got one in 45 Colt. And it has become my favorite rifle. It is a hoot to shoot. And I am really looking forward to deer season this year. Tom.

Your posts on the Low Wall are what got me started down this path...

Trust me, I'd dearly love one but the stars just aren't aligned for the foreseeable future since all the ones I've found online start at $1K.

Burn baby Burn.

I watched for almost six months before I found that one on the net. I also saw a lot of the higher priced ones. But I knew if I took my time and waited for a good deal that one would come along. I bought that one for $850(included shipping). However I was not in a hurry.

I have always been a 44 magnum shooter, with no experience with the 45 Colt. However since I have been shooting this rifle I am finding that the 45 Colt has some real merit.

I had to sell something I did not want to sell to be able to buy the Low Wall, however I determined it was what I really wanted. So I aligned up a few stars that were out of alignment. And when I fouind the right deal I was ready to pounce on it. And I did. Tom.

H&R/NEF may not catolog a rifle in .45 Colt any longer, but it is still listed in their accessory barrel section on their web site. $80 or so if I recall.

Just be patient and keep checking the various sites.I see Gunbroker
had a new H&R 20" straight walnut stock that really looked cool.

Asking price was started at $255 with buy-it now $275 no bites.

good lord, for the whole gun--new (????)

Head, I've got a couple of things in the FS forum so I understand DiY star alignment.

Catshooter, I plan to call next week on the barrels BUT for the past couple of weeks the .45 Colt (and several other barrels) are listed as "no longer available" and the .45-70 barrel is the only one listed for the BC now. As I understand it according to a Mod on Greybeard's, some have been dropped as they weren't popular and they ran out of others but are holding off new production until a new hammer forge barrel production facility comes online: http://www.go2gbo.com/forums/index.php/ ... 735.0.html

madman, that outfit is semi-local to me (well, kind of like a 4 digit grid reference in a way

How about the pedersoli rolling block baby carbine.With its short barrel should make a
good hunting gun and the rb action can be loaded up to a point.

If I wanted one bad enough, and didn't wanna spend a fortune, I'd start with an H&R .410 shotgun (can be found for $75, used to sell for that new), send the barrel out and have it chopped and sleeved. Cut er to 16 1/4", and ya got ya a nice little plinker.....

From what I've seen sellers want as much, if not more, for those than the Low Walls.

Now there's a possibility but unfortunately you can't find anything but pure D junk around here for that price.

I do like the idea though. I don't think I'd take it any shorter than 20" and I don't trust anyone around here (locally, not this board

) to do a quality or timely job.

Another thought on this ideer...

H&R/NEF say rifle barrels can't be fitted to shotgun frames. I thought (bad idea, I know

) it was a pressure issue. I don't plan on loading Ruger/TC/OMG! loads but even though it's a pistol cartridge, I wonder if that's a reason to second guess the idea?

The .410 H&R would be fine, even with Ruger only loads. the .410 itself is a pretty high pressure round, and the same receiver is used on 20 ga, etc. An H&R .410 has MASSIVE chamber walls for that reason. I have one, cut to 18", and the barrel at the muzzle is thicker than most rifle barrels. Plenty of room for a bore and sleeve job.

I think the reason they set up the program where ya had to start with a rifle is because they dumped the shotguns on the market so cheap, and didn't wanna createa suituation where a clever parts changer created cheaper rifles, undercuttting their factory rifles.. 15 or so years ago, I bought a .410 and a 20 ga for like $69 ea on sale at walmart. the rifles were never that cheap.

Hopefully someone here picked it up!

Right now I'm rolling pennies for a CZ452 .22LR I found locally. That will fill my quality .22 bolt action niche then I'll start saving for the .45 Colt H&R.

Then it's on to reloading stuff since I hope the supply will be catching up with demand better (I have 4# of VV N110 waiting but no pills or primers yet).

That might have something to do with the firing pin, the shotgun firing pin being larger in diameter than a rifle firing pin.

I'd also check SSK for a barrel, I'm not sure how they compare to T/C custom shop.
I remember (oh my) 32 years ago they made me a magna-ported 45-70 before it was available (at least I think it is now or was shortly thereafter) and the delivered to my door price I think was $112
This gun ripped the legs off one of the iron plate chickens and tossed another over the hill and it hit someone, they came out and told me to put it away. Up to 300 was a really no problem at all, however if you shoot a 500 they would need to staple your arms back on. Of course I was around 16 then my recollection maybe a bit warped by time.
