Tested - New Grizzly Cart. Co .44 Bullets - WOW
These bullets are all copper 222 grain .44 diameter. Mike Rintoul has designed these and is calling them the Tarantulas. The bullet has a hollow cavity and four serrations down the sides almost to the base. These were fired from a 2 1/2 inch 44 Special at 825 fps (roughly). They are designed for personal protection and made to open up and incapacitate an aggressor, but not exit. The test medium was a 80 pound goat at 15 yds (2 shots ) and 25 yards (3 shots). The shots were into shoulder and hip. Penetation was an average of 7 inches. They open up into 4 razor sharp petals over an inch wide! They will not penetrate body armor. WOW!

I wonder how they would perform out of a 20" home defence carbine?

Hmmm. What is the actual diameter? .429 or .431? They might be an interestin' bullet for the .44WCF.

They will be available in .38, .44, .45 and .40 (10mm) and 9mm soon. Very accurate! These are not meant for high velocity. They would be great for home defense - but the petals might break off. Smallish game would be in a heap of trouble!

86er, are the .44's for sale now and how would they load with Unique powder? I have an early Charter Target Bulldog 4'' that I like to carry and this would be great for where I carry it.

86er,
Are these bullets available in loaded ammo only, or are they available as components?
What is the weight of the .45 Cal version?

Re: Tested - New Grizzly Cart. Co .44 Bullets - WOW
Exciting news, indeed! I'm waiting to see when they are marketed.
Re: Tested - New Grizzly Cart. Co .44 Bullets - WOW
These were prototype bullets I tested for Grizzly Cartridge Co. They will come out in all the calibers I mentions and possibly 45ACP in a few months. They work best over W296, but they will work from 655 fps up to 1000 fps without losing any petals. Higher velocity may cause the petals to shed after they open up all the way. That is not necessarily a bad thing - the petals will be making vicious secondary wounds. They will be offerred in loaded cartridges first, then components later on. Each bullet is individually CNC machined, so they will not be cheap. But - on a human aggressor who can afford cheap ammo? My gun shot these to the same exact point of aim as the 200 grain Nosler Sporting Bullets I loaded, the 200 grain CCI Gold Dot and the 240 gr Swift A frame. This would be a great CA legal bullet too in handgun or a carbine. This was the first generation bullet and there will be a second generation in a week or two. The difference is that the 2ndG will open up easier for those who are handloading and cannot get higher velocity due to components, or those using an older .44 Spl like a single action where fast loads are not a good idea. The 2ndG should open from 525 fps - 850 fps without losing petals and achieving 6" of penetration. Hang in there for more details and updates.

We hear all this palaver about lawyers taking one to task over a "hot" handload in a self-defense shooting, and of course that has never happened.
But with the current anti-gun hysteria of the current Administration, and especially with the anti-gun zealots who seem to outnumber sane people in my state, I can see a lawsuit being launched if this highly effective "killer round" ever drops some poor misunderstood home invader or other assailant. With Mike offering the loaded bullet for sale, that will help to "legitimize" the round as being "off the shelf."
Then, if a similar handloaded round is ever fired in defense, it won't be as easily demonized by our fine California attorneys and our ever-so-broadminded media. (Deep sarcasm intended).
Re: Tested - New Grizzly Cart. Co .44 Bullets - WOW
Well, these won't be on the market long. It'll take about a day for someone to start calling them "cop killer" bullets. They'll probably go the way of the Black Talon. Even though the Black Talon didn't really go away, it just changed color and name, but that's another story.

My Dad is using a .357 for home defense. I need to call Mike at Grizzly and pre-order some. They look like they would dump every bit of energy into the recipient while causing massive hemorraging.

Re: Tested - New Grizzly Cart. Co .44 Bullets - WOW
Huh? I'm running 250 gr. bullets around 12-1400 FPS. out of a .45 Colt, and can run 125 gr. bullets up around 1,500 out of a .357!86er wrote:the 2ndG will open up easier for those who are handloading and cannot get higher velocity due to components, or those using an older .44 Spl like a single action where fast loads are not a good idea.
Anyways, are these gonna be sold as ammo only? Any chance I can get 'em in .452 diameter? Looking at those expanded bullets makes me think of those "Will it blend?" videos; I'm thinking, if it's innards you're asking about, the answer is a definite and resounding "YES"!

Looks like an excellent choice for all the Charter Arms .44 special shooters out there. Tarantula, perfect name for a wicked looking projectile. The views of that bullet expanded are going to make excellent print advertisements.

So, that pretty much leaves out rifles (not meant for high velocity). Home defense bullet mostly. Looks like a promising round for handgun use.86er wrote:They will be available in .38, .44, .45 and .40 (10mm) and 9mm soon. Very accurate! These are not meant for high velocity. I'm wondering too what the felon-lovers will say. "Oh, the poor career criminal! He didn't stand a chance against that awful homeowner with that bullet made only to kill! They need to be banned!" I wonder what they'll say when they find out their private armed guards use those bullets?

When are these bullets gonna be available?
Also, I just want to remind the folks that aren't aware of it that jacketed bullets create secondary projectiles when they hit something hard, and these will probably REALLY do it. Be careful of your targets, and consider the rounds you're using.
