Wouldn't he do better if he had the sights on the side of the barrel instead of the top?

Y'all don't understand he's wearing a "LIFE" jacket.
Sights only work if you know how to use them.
Years ago there was a "freedom fighter" that was captured in Africa while carrying an AK-47. The interrogators noticed that the rear sight was raised to the highest elevation. They asked the fighter about this as to why he had done so. He replied that it was so the rifle would shoot harder. Raising the sight made the rifle shoot harder so it would shoot farther.
Sights only work if you know how to use them.

That notion about the sight and "shooting harder" goes way back, before the first World War. Doesn't surprise me. I remember reading that when the Soviets were supplying aircraft and flight training to African countries for a bunch of the brush wars, they had a devil of a time getting the students to do night training in some countries. Some of the brave freedom fighters had been caught, and upon examination, 'twas noticed some strange configuirations of their AK's.
Q: Why were their AK mags so scratched up on the bottom?
A: Becuase the rifle with mag inserted made the perfect height for sitting on. Kind of like a one legged stool.
Q: Since there were no cases of hand to hand engagements, why were the bayonets deployed?
A: The bayonets pointed the direction for the bullet to go.
Q: Since all engagements were ambush encounters, why are the sights adjusted so high?
A: The AK is a very powerful rifle. If it is powerful with sights at 100 meters, it is more powerful with the sight increased to 800 meters.

A: The breech holds just enough ju-ju weed to smoke before battle.
