Fords new Jeep Y J
Ford about 5 years back, purchases a company down in Brazil, building J Jeeps. Now Ford has invested Billions in to what it calls the troller (troll) company.
The first Ford vehicle to the world market is called the Troller t4, has a Navistar/International 3.0 diesel, its military model is the t4-m, it looks like a modern Willey's jeep, only better! to see this Ford wonder goto http://www.youtube.com and search for troller t4, and you will see how much better it is over the wrangler.
When our president opens up trade with Brazil, jeep look out . Price point less than $17,000.

YouTube Troller videos:

Most of them seem to be in Spanish or Portuguese, and I haven't watched any of them yet. If Ford does import this vehicle in the future I'll be checking it out for sure.

Re: Fords new Jeep Y J
I don't understand why anyone would be interested in one of these over a standard Jeep YJ/TJ, especially w/ a diesel engline.
And to pay ~$17,000, too
I've got a 94 4.0 YJ with 105k miles on 31s, 1 1/4" lift shackles, rear locker, and removable snorkle.
Other than these minor add ons, it is completely stock and will easily do anything the "Troll" can do for a heck of a lot less money.
In the 10yr I've owned it, the only repairs are a new water pump and brakes. (knock on wood)
You can buy used "stock" YJs/TJs all day long in excellent mechanical condition for around $7000. After adding another $2000 for upgrades (tires/lift/locker), you've got one heck of a 4x4 for about $9000.
That will leave you with more than $8000 for gas and more upgrades.

I HATED giving up my 151 for a HMMWV... especially in the forests of Germany.MrMurphy wrote:Israel still makes the Sufa (armored, longer Wrangler) for the same reason.....for some things, a Humvee is NOT the answer.
None of the gaps in the trees in my Hide was wide enough for a hummer, but were just fine for my Jeep. (I could get a CUCV through most of them if necessary, but not a HMMWV.

Well i can't waite to see a 4 door model of this troll on my Ford dealers lot, with a price point less than the jeep unlimited, with a new Diesel, i don't thank the current navistar/international it uses can be certified in the US,but i'm sure Ford can do it.
Re: Fords new Jeep Y J
Nah, I'll stick with my carburated, straight six powered CJ-8. It goes anywhere I have anywhere being, and I can "fix" anything on it. Heck, the fuel pump went south one time, and I just hung a gallon milk jug of gas on the hood, and ran a piece of fuel line to the carb. Controlled the fuel flow with a pair of vicegrips and motored on out. Try that with you fancy fuel injected anything. Hope you like to walk.

+1... and you will still be able to drive it after the EMP shuts off 90% of the vehicles on the road... and you will be able to go off road to get around them.jeepnik wrote:Nah, I'll stick with my carburated, straight six powered CJ-8. Re: Fords new Jeep Y J
First of all, the price won't remain at $17K if its imported. Why? Because it'll have to have a bunch of stuff like airbags installed and probably won't pass the crash testing as-is. Glass may not be up to US Spec's either.
And then you'll have shipping.
I'm not worried about my Jeep losing value
either of them

You're gonna hate me for this, but the four door TJ's or what ever they're calling them just don't look right. I've seen the Unlimiteds and like them. Then again, they're just a TJ version of the CJ-8, which was in itself just an updated CJ-6. But something abut the four doors??? No the Cherokee, they just don't get any better in class, plus it's RED.

17 k price point, with a diesel, would put that in my garage ! The Jeep Liberty has a diesel version, maybe it is A similar engine ----- alas, me thinks it will be as ont of the other posters said, --- much more than 17k by the time it gets imported

I really like this rig - I'm going to drive it for a long time - until it's got 200,000 + miles like my old Cherokee (225K)

They can keep that foreign junk. I like Jeeps, especially my three. That in-line 6 will go about 27 million milies before a rebuild. I just put a timing chain and water pump on my old yellow '89 YJ "Islander" with 160K--It still don't burn no oil------------------------------------Sixgun

With complete respect to Jeeps and Jeep owners, we bought 3 Wranglers at the water company to use as meter reader rigs, and the have NOT held up to the task...Very rough stop and go work all day.... Not major stuff, but every little thing that could go wrong has: mostly sensors and relays, electronic stuff, brakes, won't stay in 4DW without slipping out .....2 are 2000s and 1 is a 2002. I was going to buy a new Cherokee until we bought those at work

I'll stick with my Jeep brand Jeeps, too. A '48 CJ-2A and an '89 YJ (bought brand spankin' new).

With all due respect, I beg to differ. Well, my son begs to differ. (where are you boy???) Anyway, he tells me the railroad uses Jeep Cherokee's and he tells me its nothing for them to put a quarter million miles on 'em with only regular maintenence. (Man, I hope he see's this to back me up or I'm gonna look real stupid--and that ain't hard to do )

I dont know if anyone ever bothered to notice but the little Jap Suzuki Samurais
were near identical copies of the WW-II US military jeeps. Same exact size and
same power motor. I think they quit selling them in the US in about 1997 tho
I hear they still build them for other parts of the world. The little 1.3 liters
get about 30 mpg and that aint bad when you can have 4WD when you need it.
65 is about top speed however if you live in a major city where interstate
travel avg speed is 80 like in Atlanta

Great little doodlebug. Went everywhere until it lost #3 at 76K... (warrantee was 75K).
If I could have replaced the engine I would have... but I didn't have the bread. Traded the hulk for a CIVIC, which translated into a 68 Beetle which translated into a 95, then 99 Escort Wagons...

Doug,
My brother-in-law has the same model Deere as you. (I see, we all like our toys whether they are Jeeps, pick-up trucks, neat guns or tractors ) He runs the livin' heck out of it and never did nothing to it in the way of maintenence. BTW, I used a Deere Model 400 twin cylinder K-532 gasser, 60" cut for 33 years before I bought the Kabota in 2007. The Deere is still sittin' in the barn but it needs a rod bearing

Re: Fords new Jeep Y J
I have had several Jeeps over the years and currently have a 45 willys mb and an 02 wrangler. The wangler has 125k miles on it so I have been looking. In my humble opinion the guys running Jeep have screwed them all up and the whole bunch ought to be rounded up and casterated. What they have done is like defacing Mount Rushmore. I was going to say the Statue of liberty and then I remembered it was French made, that is a discussion for another day. When I looked at the new jeeps the interiors looked like cocktail lounges, not something you could hose the mud and blood out of after a hunt. I like a Jeep that is a bare bones work machine like the willys. If they made and sold a willys today I would buy it in an instant. In India they still make the willys cj 3b (the high hood).

Dave,
I agree with you on how the Jeep people made their vehicles "plush". Thats why I have a junker with 43 million miles on it for everyday driving and the Rubicon for going upstate, shootin' matches, or gunshows. ----------Sixgun
See how clean I keep it? But...........that motor is spotless. The blanket is for my "Road Dogs"
,
Of course, the Rubicon stays undercover......brother---sounds like a movie

Re: Fords new Jeep Y J
Well this WAS my hunting rig an '01 TJ.
But I NEEDED more pulling power and room inside. If I'd had the money, I'd kept it, but could not justify paying the rediculous CA reg fees and insurance on a vehicle I seldom drove. It was my daily driver. It had a 2" lift, 31" tires, onboard air
Tank and 12V compressor here ($200 off Ebay) (before splitting them up for the install)
http://handirifle.com/articles/huntingrig.htm (pics too big to post)
4.0L fuel injected inline 6, 5 spd. In the early months it had some brake rotor issues that finally got resolved. Other than that ZERO problems for the 50,000 miles I put on it.
They are GREAT vehicles but it had too many limitations in space, for my needs.
I now use an '06 Tundra Double cab 4x4 truck and an '83 Honda XL600 for off road needs. Nowhere near as fun as the Jeep, but more practical for me.
Oh yea, I see no advantage of the Ford over the Jeep. Diesel is somewhat of a plus off road, BUT most diesel applications like these are sorely underpowered for on road use.

Yea, that boy of mine is just a young pup (36). Back when I was drinkin' & drivin', we had these things called "vent windows". We would use 'em for tapping our cigarette ashes, throwin' out empty beer cans, even the occasional joint would get thrown out if "the man" was tailgating ----------Sixgun

Why would you throw a joint of pipe out a wing window? LOL, I remember folks flicking their ashes out the wing, and how funny it was when embers would blow back in and get in their shirt collars! I'm from about the same generation(I'm 32) and remember when I found out that album covers and frisbees were actually used for things other that what I generally saw them used for; I remember tripping out potheads as a kid, because I could always find their "stash". It was ALWAYS right under the sofa!

32? Your a spring chicken compared to me (54) and an embryo compared to Terry Murbach (147) My generation made pot (and other nasty drugs) "acceptable" to the young crowd.

Heck, when we were young it was sex, drugs and rock and roll. Now drugs are bad, rock and roll is the music of the devil, and sex can kill you. As my sister says, our generation used up all the fun, except for small bits and we're are keeping for ourselves.Travis Morgan wrote:Gee, thanks. Old Ironsights,
One of the upcoming "projects" is to put my early fourties jeep under a Suzuki body, I am too old for the ( cold & wet ) dashing young man image.
Show up at a woman my age's house cold & wet and she wont let you in and chew your butt for being old & stupid!
