Microwave the Little Bugers
I have found a way to prevent deer tick problems for myself at least. I use some Cutter Advanced spray , but what I do is when I am done being in the woods,I have 200 acres of woods (so I am in them alot), I come into the mudroom after doing a quick visual check of myself then carefully remove my brushed off Gore-Tex hiking low tops/socks and place them in my 1000w microwave bought for this use for 1 min. While thats running I remove my hiking shorts/shirt in the bathroom and set them in a small white container that looks like a fancy waste can. After taking a hot shower/using a spongey brush etc. I put on a pair of gym shorts and bring the little container out to the microwave/ remove the shoes/socks and put in the hiking shorts and shirt for 1 min. I have found at least for myself I notice a tick better on my bare legs/arms better and brush it off than to have it crawl up the inside of the pants in the small gap between the boots etc.Remember it takes some time for the tick to bite into you and if removed before 24hours you supposedly avoid lyme disease.I have several sets of shorts/shirts to wash as needed but I dont have to wash them every darn time I go out in the woods. This way I dont have a bunch of clothes in a hamper wondering boy I hope a deer tick isnt inside one of them a gets on something or someone or I dont have to run the washer all the time only for that issue. You do have to be sure nothing is in the pockets, dont burn yourself though I use cotton items and have not had any problems, I am no doctor and state to do this you do it at your own risk but it works great for me.
Have not had one problem since!! S/B done with adult supervision and again at your own risk! Good Luck!
PS- I have done some tests, and it fries the little bugers quick.

You must not be married...
Sounds like a good idea. I have gone 2 weeks without a clothing change with no bugs by using liberal applications of DEET and Chigaway.

Re: Microwave the Little Bugers
So Madman...when they splattered, did they get blood all over the inside of the microwave,...or did you wrap them in Saran wrap first?!
What setting did you use? High? Medium? Low? Or did you just hit #9, the preset for "Insect"?
I assume you got the large capacity microwave to fit all those clothes? What are the instruction..."one minute on high, then remove and turn clothes inside out, then fry for another minute"?

Re: Microwave the Little Bugers
They actually didnt really splatter so much as after about 10 seconds
they stopped moving, turned all blackish and shriveled all up.
If they got into the popcorn you might just think it was peppercorn!!
Size 2.2 CF Important--Do not turn, no oill!!!

Re: Microwave the Little Bugers
A old lady in Indianapolis, and this was prolly late 1970s, put her little dog in the microwave to kill flea........."SPLAT" and it killed her with a heart attack. It was in the Indy paper.

Re: Microwave the Little Bugers
ya beat me to it!
I was wondering about deets though. I thought that was the next worse thing to lyme disease? I use it VERY SPARINGLY in mx to keep those tiny little flying killers off of me, but I'm scared to use much of it.
so, what's the real story on deets? it's the only thing I know that seems to be very effective. I can just take the top off the bottle and the kamikazis head for the exits.

The smell alone would probably be enough without DEET....Hobie wrote:I have gone 2 weeks without a clothing change with no bugs by using liberal applications of DEET and Chigaway.

Re: Microwave the Little Bugers
Here is the deal,
I thought long and hard how to prevent the chance of bringing
a deer tick into the home and possibly doing harm to the family.
One tiny female deer tick is the size of a pin head, before gorging
on a host. It produces 3000 larva(liittle ones)if the mother is infected
ALL the little ones are infected.Nice to have in the home lurking.
So I thought what is the best way to Kill those little things right now?
Like so many years before I would come in from a hike, throw
the clothes in the hamper, but then reading up on this some more they say they are so tiny at that stage you wont see them. Now they are in your house.
By this INGENIUS idea of using a secondary microwave it kills the little bugers.Trust me I change my clothes/shower daily and have more clothes according to my wife(she says I am a clothes horse)but I think this is a good way to be proactive on killing the darn things.
See ya

Madman, I agree..it's an ingenius solution. All the teasing is just in good fun.
Now I need to convince my wife I need another microwave dedicated to pest prevention!

Re: Microwave the Little Bugers
Good Lord "madman4570 " -- man up and get rid of the girly shorts and wear some man-pants. The hell with the microwave!!! Burn those little suckers off with a blow torch.
Just kidding. Have you thought of putting a bag of popcorn in with the first load in the microwave? That way you can snack after your shower and while getting the next load ready.

Re: Microwave the Little Bugers
All right you caught me,but I am giving my bright colored short shorts
away before I get seen running through the woods in them,
while eating a fresh bag of popcorn.Ya, I am going to try doing a bag
of corn today with the first load.
Also heck ya, I try to go to as many Gun Shows that I am able to.
For them I am wearing a nice camo though!!

Re: Microwave the Little Bugers
I guess popping ticks in the microwave is like breaking those little plastic bubbles of shipping material. Once you start you can't stop.

Re: Microwave the Little Bugers
Well, MY wife (neither one of them) would have let me microwave my shorts! As to the too much time now that you're retired, that will end best enjoy it now. Once people figure out you have time, they'll "steal" it.madman4570 wrote:Hobie, ya I am married and when I walk the log trails in the woods

I've never "nuked" my shorts, but have exploded tomato worms. Put 'em in a sealed baggie and ten seconds later, BAM, green goo.
