EMF Hartford Model 1892 357 Mag rifle

Post by Borne Looser »

Just bought an EMF Hartford 1892 357 mag rifle and I was wondering why the instructions say, "Do not under any circumstances use use any ammunition having full metal jacket bullets." Does anyone know why the strong warning from EMF.

Potential tubular magazine detonation. Cartridges sit bullet to primer.

Yep. Most FMJs are either Spire Point or Round Nose. There are a (very) few Truncated-cone Flat Point FMJs, but they are a reloading component... which most gun manufacturers are required by their lawyers to frown on also.

Anyway, the Hartford-Rossi .357 is really a Cast bullet/SJHP/SJFP/SJHP type gun... which, by odd coincidence, is about all that is available commercially in .357 anyway.

Just bought a Lee 6 cavity RN .357 Mag / .38 Special mold for my M92 .357 Mag .

The Federal 170 grain ammo I bought at Walley World ( last year ) for my .30-30 , is round nose soft point .

If Federal's lawyers are not concerned about round nose lead , I am not .

Avoiding FMJ's is probably not a bad idea .

Besides , reloads with home cast bullets are a lot cheaper . :-)

God bless

You do what you want, but blowing up my piece and possibly pieces of me with it isn't something I'd hang my hat on because it's available. Just because it exists doens't mean the rounds are meant for a tube magazine.

Remington is making 45 Colt cartridges with rather pointy lead bullets in them for pistols and revolvers only right now. I've looked at them and there's no way I'd put them in a tube magazine.
