ot-one really bad day

Post by Jason_W »

i know that lot's of people have it worse, but today was a rough one

i had a cold for most of my days off this week, so i took it easy to the point where i was going stir crazy. today i was feeling better, so naturally i went ice fishing. slow day fish wise, but that's all part of the game. usually this time of year there is usually enough snow on the ice so that you don't need crampons. today was the exception to that rule. the lake was polished glare ice.

anyway, i get set up at my spot about a half mile from the access and all was going well until i got up to check my tip-ups. i lost my footing, went butt over head and landed on my armpit, dislocating my shoulder.

since it's a weekday, and there was no one else on the lake, i had to pick up all eight tip-ups, break down my shelter, pull all my gear the half mile back to shore, and load it into my truck wit one good arm and the other hanging useless at my side. to top it all off, i fell a second time on my way back. the pain was such that i made a bit of a scene with all the screaming.

anyway, went to the er, they took a bunch of expensive x-rays, doped me up, popped the shoulder back in place, and now i have to wear a ridiculous and likely expensive sling for a few weeks. i fear the bill on this one

At least there were no witnesses to you throwing a hissy fit, so you didn't have embarrassment added to injury.

I hope your arm gets better fast.

My grandfather told me of an ice-fisherman who did exactly that after falling and hitting his head. He was out over night and died of exposure...

That reminds me of what my son said to me when I was first trying to teach him to ice skate. After getting up from falling again, he looked me straight in the face and said "Dad, this ice is much to slippery" Heal well and best of luck.

Oh screaming like a baby when one dislocates a shoulder is allowed. Actually, I screamed when they popped it back in. Til then it just sorta throbbed. Then the nice medic at the ER decided to give me the morphine. Sadistic bunch if you ask me. Wear the sling till they tell you not to. Then do the rehab. I wish I had listened. Mine would probably be in better shape today. But I was young and invincible.

That sucks Jason...I hope you mend well. Modern chemistry with its pain relieving qualities are a blessing though, eh?

Save some of those pain meds for when the bill arrives. It'll help a bit.

I've done my right shoulder twice. Seems it's easier after the first time.

Wait 'til you're in your 40's. It will wake you up at 4 am when you've been sleeping on you side too long.

I wish you better luck!! I mean that!

Dude sorry to hear it. I had my share of winter fun induced ER trips this year. Take the drugs let it rest then do the rehab and it will be back to snuff in no time.

Heal up fast. Of course, this may be a hint that drilling holes through the ice to fish isn't all it's "cracked up" to be!

We've all been there for sure Jason and glad your on the mend. When it rains it pours and I've had a few lively discussions with the Lord on that one. I recently did the screamin idiot routine when(brain surgeon that I am) , I began upacking my new Gas Grill while barefoot out in my garage. Lifted up a box and when it was chest high, down came a hidden package which contained 3 cast iron grills, about 25 pounds, and subsequently guilloteened my big toe. I screamed, hooted and hollered for at least 15 minutes before I hopped into my house humiliated. Totally pulverized it to where I could barely walk for about 3 weeks and had to have a little minor surgery done on it. Neighbors don't seem to want to talk after the incident......... John Wayne I aint!!!!

Man what a bad day. Heal up quick, and don't forget the Physical Therapy. No, they are not really sadists, they just understand that pain is sometimes a necessity after a lot of accidental pain. A few Ibuprofen will help with the swelling when you do the P.T.

reminds me of my first attempted hunting trip, I went about a mile into a canyon with steep sides. I stepped on a rock which gave way and popped my ankle. The pain was such that I was nauseous for 15 minutes or so. I howled loud enough to scare Bigfoot. So there I was with a pack, a gun, and about a half pint of water. Rather than crawl the mile, I elected to climb up the canyon side, so I could pull myself up and use my upper body as much as possible to stay off the ankle.

I didn't have your ice to deal with, thank God, but it took me 7 hours to climb up the canyon side, dragging my bad foot behind me. I discarded extra stuff as I went, and I almost left the gun down there. Glad I didn't because I used it as a cane when I got to the road.

When I finally got home I had lost 4 pounds. Well it was a learning experience.

ouch. i think i got off easy compared to that. i think the worst part about this is the temporary loss of independence. i need my wife to help with things like putting on a shirt :( she's really good about it though. she even talked me in to taking the day off from work today. i was raised by my dad to go to work unless you're actually hospitalized and in a coma.

because winter is just so darn long up here :D

that and ice caught fish are great eating. in the summer months, a lot of them get a bit mushy and full of parasites.
